Re: Digikam-users Digest, Vol 130, Issue 3

p.tarot@aveniortho.fr
Hi team,
Few weeks ago I askes help because I had problem with Digikam and removable hard disc on Mac OS X Yosemite.
  • Gilles answered "Sound like a problem with file open limitation under OSX. Try to look here : http://docs.basho.com/riak/latest/ops/tuning/open-files-limit/#Mac-OS-X". I went on this site ans did the modifications recommanded on that site. NO RESULT
  • Then Simon and Lutz gave me the advice :
    • to sanitize the names of the Albums ( no diacritic marks,no spacer...). I did this. NO RESULT
    • to check with an USB drive  various disk formats recognisable by Mac.I did this . NO RESULT
  • I asked help to a friend computerist and:
    • he don't succeed in resolving this issue on my Mac
    • he installed Digikam from a Linux distribution on his computer and he said that the external media was already visible at its right place in the preferences panel
    • BUT ihe said that " In every case Digikam does not allow to display the thumbnails of a disk which is not connected.Thist is not a part of its features unlike Iphoto or Lightroom". Is it right?
    • If yes can we hope to have this feature in a next release ?

Thank you in advance for your response.
Best regards.
Philippe

Hi Philippe,

I can read the messages correctly as I only read English but what stood
out for me was characters and spaces in the album names.

In Screenshot-03 note the leading space for "photos a classer". It
differs to "Phototheque-01".

You also use characters with diacritic marks. It is hard sometimes to
verify whether all programs, databases, OS understand and accept these
characters.

Personally I don't use "-" either. I have had problems in the past with
various programs not working properly because '-" was in path.
Substitute "_" if a spacer is required.

This may not be the issue but it is worth a try to sanitise your names.
Only use a-z A-Z 0-9 for paths and album names. See if this works. No
"~!@$%^&*(){}?<>", spaces or characters with diacritic marks.

Best of luck.

Cheers Simon

Hi team,
I have a problem using removable discs with Digikam 4.13.0 on Maxc OS
X. 10 (Yosemite).
In the Preferences I set the place of the Digikam Data Base on the
hard disk of my computer (Screenshot 01).
Then I added as Local Collection an Album located on my computer in
the Folder "Pictures " and called "Photos à Classer "
Then I added a new collection (called Photothèque 01) located on a
removable (external) hard disc. At this moment appeared the message
shown in the screenshot 02 (very hard to understand the meaning ???)
I clicked OK twice to close the Collections window of the Preferences.
All the Album of the removable media was imported very
well.(Screenshot 03)
Then I quit Digikam and disconnect the removable disc
Now when I re-open Digikam :

  * with the external disc disconnected :
o The Album " Photothèque 01" of the removable média doesn't
appear (Screenshot-04) and in the Preferences I can see that
the Collection "Photothèque" has moved in the Local
        Collection.(Screenshot 04)
o if I connect at this moment the external disc the the Album
        "Photothèque-01 doesn't mount".
  * with the external disc connected, the catalog appears quickly but
I must wait minutes to obtain the thumbnails ???

I don't know if something is wrong in my settings or if it's an issue
of the program.
Thanks for the help.
Chears.
Philippe

Re: Digikam-users Digest, Vol 130, Issue 3

Gilles Caulier-4
I currently prepare a DMG installer for OSX El Capitan with digiKam 5.0.0 beta. It's at 55% done. I start to solve the most difficult problems now, all relevant of KDE frameworks libraries, even if 80% of KDE dependencies have been dropped or optional now. The 20% of the rest of KDE is complex to compile, due to multiple inheritance with others KDE components. To resume, KDE is the hell on non Linux system : it's not really a pure Qt5 frameworks dedicated to extent Qt5 API as well. This is why KDE application don't work or work badly on non Linux/KDE desktop.

My dream, in next years, is to have a pure Qt5 implementation in digiKam with all KDE dependencies fully optional, as Marble do currently. But it's will be long to do.

So, please, be patient. I hope to have a 5.0.0-beta DMG installer ready in few weeks.

best

Gilles Caulier
