Is there an option in ACDESee to store metadata in sidecar file?
Maybe this one could be compatible to DigiKam.

Other solution is to write a script for ExifTools that extracts needed
data from pictures.

It seems ACDSee uses some kind of XML-structure for embedding the tags,
but it does not seem valid XML to me:
<Categories>
   <Category Assigned="0">Ihmiset
     <Category Assigned="0">Oma perhe
       <Category Assigned="1">Marjatta</Category>
       <Category Assigned="1">Jouni</Category>
     </Category>
   </Category>
   <Category Assigned="0">Paikat
     <Category Assigned="1">koti
       <Category Assigned="1">Kouvola</Category>
     </Category>
   </Category>
</Categories>

A while back there was a thread about supporting some standard category
structure (biology related?), and I seem to recall that as an outcome,
any embedded tag or XML could be read. Don't pin me on the specifics,
but maybe it rings a bell for someone with a better memory ;-)

Good luck with the migration!

Best regards,

Boudewijn

I was thinking that Exiftool can extract all metadata to a file in Windows and then you could import it with Digikam - but then again I only have a few hundred jpg's. I've played around with Exif and it is very powerful

Just an idea

Is it worth trying Exiftool ( http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/
) as this programme runs in Windows as well as Linux. It may allow you to
see how all the metadata is stored.
