Sorry to hear that digikam isn't working too well for you.
First thing I would recommend is to backup your existing albums as is to DVD or some other high density storage.

There is a re-read meta data from images option, which can be used to get your database back into sync, available under the Albums menu.
I would also recommend you check your Collections Settings, under the configure digikam menu.
I would also recommend you check with upstream support as they maywell have some better advice:
