Questions about metadata and databases

Chris Green
I want to be absolutely sure my metadata is always updated in the
image files.

So, if I go to:-

    Settings->Configure Digikam->Metadata

... and tick all the boxes at the top ('Image Tags', 'Caption and
Title', etc.) does this mean that Digikam always writes these to the
image file?

What are the odd looking graphics next to the text "Write this
Information to the Metadata"? On my systems there's a tiny blue circle
with a very thin box next to it and, underneath that an even tinier
blue spot and a line next to it.

Are the 'Read from Sidecar Files' and 'Write to Sidecar Files' in
addition to writing to the image files or instead?  I.e. do I have to
leave both of these boxes unticked if I want the data in the image
files?

Finally, what format(s) does Digikam use to write the Metadata?  At
the bottom of the Metadata settings it has links which describe EXIF,
IPTC and XMP but it doesn't say which ones it uses.

Re: Questions about metadata and databases

I just checked the 'time stamp' and 'caption' boxes and added a title to
one of my images. That title and time stamp appeared in the metadata
under the IPTC tab.

Hope that helps a little. I'm no expert.

As for the odd graphics, I think it just is related to the entire check
list. In other words, it's just showing that the items you check will
all get written to the meta data. That dialog is asking which items you
want to write to the meta data in list form. I may be wrong, but that's
my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

I have never used the Read/Write to/from sidecar feature, so can't help
you on that one.

I worked out where stuff went by trial and error. Use exiftools
(windows) or exiv2 (linux) to export data saved and inspect in a text
editor.

Yes, I tried a few things to see if they were written to the image
metadata, and they were.  However the configuration options are not
very clear in how they work which is really why I asked the question.
I don't want to suddenly find I've lost a load of metadata.

Maybe, however it does look very like a check box that has got
squashed and almost disappears for some reason.  The tick boxes all
look perfectly sensible but the odd things alongside "Write this
information to the Metadata" worry me.

Even odder, I just made the configuration settings window bigger and
now there are *three* of the blue dot and white oblong graphics
alongside the text!

I'm not aiming to use these options either.  There's a bit that
worries me *there* though, in the same box as the Read/Write sidecar
files tick boxes is a box saying "Update file timestamp when files are
modified", does this only apply to sidecar files or does it apply to
writing metadata to the image files?

If you look a bit below the "Write This Information to the Metadata" title,
You'll see a line "Reading and Writing Metadata" with a folder icon in
front of it. By analogy, the three blue dots and white bars are the icon
for a list, in front of the first title...

Well that explains them at least!  Thank you.

However - why is there an icon for a 'list' there and the icon for a
'folder' next to the sidecar options?  I don't really follow the
meaning.
