Playing videos in V5

Stuart T Rogers
I know I've asked this before but I am still unable to get anything
other than sound for videos in digikam.

Initially openSUSE Tumbleweed had the wrong compile options which
stopped the thumbnail from displaying, this has been resolved and now
the thumbnails are displayed.

I have asked on the TW forums and had it confirmed by one user there
that his videos play OK so obviously I am missing something but we have
compared what we have installed and so far have not found I am missing
anything. The videos can be played in any player I have installed
including Totem Kaffeine and VLC so the relevant codecs are installed. I
have all the relevant gstreamer and QT%Multimedia packages installed. I
have started digikam from a console window but none of the message which
appear seem to show any errors.

So what I would appreciate is some help in debugging this to get to the
root of the what I need to install or configure.

Re: Playing videos in V5

GStreamer support for video files is optional while Qt5Multimedia compilation. Ask to packagers to take a care about. I have to make the same with Mageia 6 distro few month ago, when Gstreamer 0.10 to 1.0 have been updated.

Note : Qt5 and GStreamer 0.10 is the hell. GStreamer 1.0 AND Qt >= 5.6 must be used.

Re: Playing videos in V5

Stuart T Rogers
I have both gstreamer 1.8.2 and gstreamer-0_10 installed and the -0_10
release is all that is available in openSUSE presently, the QT libraries
are 5.6. Looks like I need to wait for a gstreamer update.

Re: Playing videos in V5

Stuart T Rogers
I have been doing a little more digging and apparently gstreamer-0_10
seems quite old and I was able to un-install it with no problems so now
I have only gstreamer 1.8.2 installed with all the appropriate plugins
etc and yet I still have the problem in digikam.

So I guess I still need some help in debugging this if anyone has any
ideas please?

two things:

* for what I understand from the Gilles answer, digikam have to be
compiled with special options to connect to gstreamer.

* how do you try to run the video? I have to right clic, then choose
"open" to have a video run in digikaml

No. Only Qt5::Multimedia depend of GStreamer under Linux. That all.

The only option in digiKam is about to support Qt5::Multimedia.

Re: Playing videos in V5

Stuart T Rogers
OK to answer both Gilles and jdd

To open the video I do what I always did in V4 which is double click on
it and it expect it to open and play in the preview part of the main
display which is what it has always done in V4 - in V5 it plays the
video sound but the preview window shows all the thumbnails not the video.

Secondly the openSUSE version did not have the correct compile options
for QT5Multimedia so once that was corrected the proper thumbnails
appeared for the video clips and the video should play. One of the
openSUSE forum members confirmed that for him he can get the video to
play, although it is not clear exactly how he did this as he does not
normally use digikam and just tested it for me.

If I right click on the video thumbnail and use open with and choose a
video player then the video plays but externally to digikam in that
players own window.

Now unless V5 has changed how it works I expected the video to play in
the preview part of the digikam window.

Re: Playing videos in V5

Stuart T Rogers
Following Robert Zellers advice on Leap I have installed Digikam V5
successfully and now have both Digikam V5 from a private repo and a copy
installed from Leap repos. No matter which one I start both run fine and
both play my videos exactly as I was expecting. This obviously means I
have to start digging into my Tumbleweed system to try to find the
differences which must be causing the issue I have on that system.

Well there was an openSUSE Tumbleweed update for digikam today which is
just a re-compile basically so I installed it and you've guessed it my
videos now play OK as they should. I have no idea exactly what was dne
in the recompile but now it works!

Re: Playing videos in V5

Hamnes Aaberge
I still have the problem with no ability to play videos in Digikam. I'm now
using the digikam from Opensuse in the repository KDE-Extra. It says that it
is compiled with QT Multimediasupport. If i rightclick the tumbnail and open
it iv VLC (which is set as default) it plays perfectly in a sseperate vindow.
It also played perfectly in Digikam 4. In Digikam 5 I get the message
(translated): "It happened something wrong with the mediaplayer". If I play
MP4-files nothing happens (except for the message), with avi-files I can hear
the sound but no video. As suggested I have tried to remove all gstreamer-0_10
and just keep the gstreamer 1.8.3, including the plugins base, good, bad, ugly,
qt and qt5 with the same result. I've had the same problem in Digikam 5.0, 5.1
and 5.2. So if anyone has maneged to get it to work I would be really glad to
hear suggestions about what to do.

Re: Playing videos in V5

Maik Qualmann
You must install the additional gstreamer packages from Packman repository.

Re: Playing videos in V5

Philip Johnsson
Besides having supported video codec in gstreamer 1.0 series of plugins you also need the runtime dependent package libqt5multimedia5-plugins (or equal package name on your linux distribution) to have libqt5multimedia5 connect to the gstreamer codec plugins to play video in digikam 5.

Re: Playing videos in V5

Maik Qualmann
I use for the digiKam development openSUSE Tumbleweed, all video formats play
fine. No settings for this in digikam. But first with the gstreamer-plugin-libav
(ffmpeg).

Re: Playing videos in V5

Hamnes Aaberge
I finally got it working. First I reinstalled all the gstreamer-0_10, without
any result. The I tried to fix another problem (kmail 5.3 crashing, probably
because of conflict with the driver for nvidia-card), where I ended up with
including the Factory-repository to cboltz and did a "zypper dup". In the
process it did include or upgrade a few gstreamerpackages (sorry I did not
take note of which ones). Anyway, after that it worked :-)
So maybe a "zypper dup" (or adding gstreamer-plugin-libav) could be the
sollution also for others?

Re: Playing videos in V5

Fabian Frank
In reply to this post by Maik Qualmann
Hi,
just a short question - a little OT - sorry:
I never could play videos directly from digikam. I am on Windows (8.1).
Is there something I can do about this?
VLC is installed.

Thanks.
Best
Fabian

Re: Playing videos in V5

Gilles Caulier-4
Install extra codec required by Qt5::Multimedia framework as explained in welcome page from Windows Installer.

Look the section about video support in digiKam handbook :

Hi,
just a short question - a little OT - sorry:
I never could play videos directly from digikam. I am on Windows (8.1). Is there something I can do about this?
VLC is installed.

Thanks.
Best
Fabian

I use for the digiKam development openSUSE Tumbleweed, all video formats play
fine. No settings for this in digikam. But first with the gstreamer-plugin-libav
(ffmpeg).

Besides having supported video codec in gstreamer 1.0 series of plugins you
also need the runtime dependent package libqt5multimedia5-plugins (or equal
package name on your linux distribution) to have libqt5multimedia5 connect
to the gstreamer codec plugins to play video in digikam 5.

You must install the additional gstreamer packages from Packman

I still have the problem with no ability to play videos in Digikam. I'm

now

using the digikam from Opensuse in the repository KDE-Extra. It says

that it

is compiled with QT Multimediasupport. If i rightclick the tumbnail and
open it iv VLC (which is set as default) it plays perfectly in a

sseperate

vindow. It also played perfectly in Digikam 4. In Digikam 5 I get the
message (translated): "It happened something wrong with the
mediaplayer".
If I play MP4-files nothing happens (except for the message), with
avi-files I can hear the sound but no video. As suggested I have tried
to
remove all gstreamer-0_10 and just keep the gstreamer 1.8.3, including

the

plugins base, good, bad, ugly, qt and qt5 with the same result. I've had

the

same problem in Digikam 5.0, 5.1 and 5.2. So if anyone has maneged to
get
it to work I would be really glad to hear suggestions about what to do.

Well there was an openSUSE Tumbleweed update for digikam today which
is
just a re-compile basically so I installed it and you've guessed it my
videos now play OK as they should. I have no idea exactly what was dne
in the recompile but now it works!

I

have to start digging into my Tumbleweed system to try to find the

To open the video I do what I always did in V4 which is double

click on

it and it expect it to open and play in the preview part of the
main
display which is what it has always done in V4 - in V5 it plays the
video sound but the preview window shows all the thumbnails not the
video.

Secondly the openSUSE version did not have the correct compile

options

for QT5Multimedia so once that was corrected the proper thumbnails
appeared for the video clips and the video should play. One of the
openSUSE forum members confirmed that for him he can get the video

to

play, although it is not clear exactly how he did this as he does

not

normally use digikam and just tested it for me.

If I right click on the video thumbnail and use open with and

choose a

video player then the video plays but externally to digikam in that
players own window.

Now unless V5 has changed how it works I expected the video to play

in

the preview part of the digikam window.

No. Only Qt5::Multimedia depend of GStreamer under Linux. That
all.

The only option in digiKam is about to support Qt5::Multimedia.
