Photos to test new LensFun image editor plugin...

Gilles Caulier-4
Hi all digiKam users,

With digiKam for KDE4, a new plugin to correct lens distorsions have
been introduced in svn by Adrian Schroeter. This plugin for digiKam
Image Editor and Showfoto use LensFun shared library :

http://lensfun.berlios.de/

This library use a database of lens/camera settings to fix
automatically distorsions :

- Chomatics Aberrations.
- Vignetting.
- Color corrections.
- Distorsion
- Geometry

http://digikam3rdparty.free.fr/Screenshots/LensFunPlugin/

To be able to test this plugin, we need pictures taken in special conditions:

- wide angle,
- barreling and pincushion,
- tele-lenses
- panorama lenses

Of course, plugin support 16 bits color depth. You can fix RAW files directly.

Note than plugin use Exif and Makernote informations to check shot
conditions and fix image.

You can send me pictures to test in my private mail (caulier dot
gilles at gmail dot com). If you cannot use mail with large
attachements, just share your files over the web and mail me the url.

We will trying to finalize this plugin for next digiKam 0.10.0 release.

Thanks in advance for your help

Pictures of anything in particular?  Is there a test pattern I can print?
What settings: focus, aperture?  I have a Nikon D50 and a D200 and several
lenses, including a very wide angle, I can use for test photos.

Taking a pictures with geometric frame which can be deformed by the
lens. For colors aberrations, something which use a lots of colors
taken with a low quality lens.

No. but we can certainly found something on the web. Any links welcome.

>  What settings: focus, aperture?

all low limit values are generally the wrong conditions to take a
picture, especially with wide angle. For ex : 18 mn F2.8 will provide
distortion and vignetting.

The idea, is to have something like this :

http://powerretouche.com/Lens-distortion_plugin_introduction.htm

but with full automatic settings ! The plugin parse Exif and Makernote
data, get lens type, focal, aperture, camera make and model, and ping
lensfun camera/lens database to perform adjustments.

Currently, only few camera/lens model work fine. Few one don't work
duing an uncomplete database calibration settings in LensFun. All
contributions are welcome to improve these settings. There is a notice
to generate calibration settings with your camera on lensfun web page
:

http://lensfun.berlios.de/article.php?story=20071113085018781

I will try to contact author to make a collaboration between digiKam
and Lensfun.

Hi Adrian and Gilles,
I tested shots taken with a wide angle lens 10mm. I got the calibration data from hugin and put them into the xml files (see attachment which you can install over your lensfun file). The widget detects the camera and lens fine. But nothing really works.
I get the following problems :
- zooming in too strong
- the lower half of the image is missing
- no geometric effect is visible
- debugging info says all is fine

I put a test image onto digikam3rdparty into the TEST_IMAGES/lensfun folder.

There is no zooming function. You use an old version of the plugin...

xml file sent to LensFun Author and intergrated in library

The widget detects the camera and lens fine. But nothing really works.

Plugin screenshot updated :

http://digikam3rdparty.free.fr/Screenshots/LensFunPlugin/lensfunplugin03.png

Missing 3 settings : Aperture, Focal Length, and Subject Distance, to
perform manual adjustements, if Exif metadata is not avaialble in
photo.

Best
