Photo printers

Anders Lund
Hi all,

I consider buying a photo printer, which should be resonably transportable and
deliver good quality prints.

Which printers do you use?

I need good linux support.

I currently consider a epson xp 750 or 850, anyone having experience with that
one?

Re: Photo printers

Photonoxx
I can't speak about these specific model, but I use an Epson R3000 printer with the Epson linux driver and the quality is very good (non noticeable difference compared with prints made with windows driver).

May be first thing to do is to check if Epson have a linux driver for these model.

They are listed under "perfect" in the openprinting.org listing :)

I got a Canon Selphy ES40 a few years ago and was always very
impressed with the quality. Also you can carry it around with you and
don't need a PC for it but can just directly insert the memory card
and browse and select the fotos to print:

As far as I am aware very few if any of the Selphy Canon printers work
properly with Linux. I have a wireless one and although it can be made
to print under Linux it does not do it properly. For that I use Windows
7 under VirtualBox or I can either connect a camera directy to it or put
the SD card in the slot.

I also have a wireless capable Canon IP7250 and I use Turboprint to
print under Linux which I find much superior to the standard Linux
drivers and it also works wirelessly using Turboprint. The only downside
of Turboprint is that it is commercial but in my view very well worth
the money. I used to have an Epson R800 which is a great printer and
supported by Turboprint. Sadly mine blocked its jets and was not an
economical repair.

I must stress I have no connection with Turboprint other than being a
very satisfied customer.

I have a five years old Epson R360 now after using mostly HP
printers for ages; chose it explicitly because of good linux
drivers. The 6-cartridge ink system distributes ink
consumption fairly well, only sometimes I wish for a bigger
black cartridge.

The built in software gives even better results, straight
from USB-drive. Unfortunately this built-in-software in my
printer does neither support PNG nor PDF (but newer models
should - check this!). And it's proprietary!

Another point; vertical paper-feed at the back of a printer
is nice to minimize the footprint - but has tendency of
collecting more dust and small objects. Resulting in
unreliable paper traction. Also, you'll be more limited in
the choice of thick papers (my very old HP A3
straight-through printer can print on 6mm thick cardboards).

Good luck,

Sveinn í Felli

I use exclusively my Epson R3000 wirelessly without any obvious issue.

Except a misunderstand, Epson driver are LGPL licensed, which is better than commercial turboprint, in my opinion.
