Packages of Digikam 5 beta 2 for Ubuntu 15.10 on my PPA

Philip Johnsson
Hi Ubuntu users that use my PPA

I have just uploaded packages of Digikam 5 beta 2 for Ubuntu 15.10. I packaged it so it can be tested as something extra to my packages of digikam 4.14 as digikam 5 beta 2 will share some common files with digikam 4 when they are installed on the same computer.

If you use Ubuntu 15.10 you can test digikam 5 by installing my "extra" PPA with the following command:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:philip5/extra
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install digikam5 showfoto5

If you haven't used my PPA before that will also give you an update of Digikam 4 to 4.14.

In your system start menu you will find both Digikam (version 4) and Digikam 5 beta 2 that you can choose what to start (I'm not sure if it matters if you run them both at the exact same time with the same sqlite3 database but they can share the same database otherwise.). Remember that Digikam 5 is still beta software and not ready for production use. If you want to start digikam 5 from the command line you start it with the command "digikam5". The "digikam" command will start version 4 of Digikam.

If you experience any conflicts or problems with the packages then just report it back to me and I'll try to fix it as soon as possible. Right now it should just work. Bugs in Digikam 5 should be reported back to the Digikam team so they can enhance Digikam 5 for the final release.

Happy digikaming!

Philip

Hi Philip,

Thank you so much for building digiKam packages for Ubuntu! I
installed it on Kubuntu 15.10, and everything works like a charm so
far.

Best,
Dmitri

Dmitri,

Nice to know!

Have fun discovering the future of Digikam! :)

All features except multimedia support are enable as far as I know. I have to look into enabling it as right now ubuntu 15.10 give conflicting binary symbols as mixed versions of gstreamer will load at the same time and crash digikam 5. Hopefully I can enable it in a coming update.

Hello Philip,

great work! Is it also possible to build the packages for Ubuntu 14.10?

Re: Packages of Digikam 5 beta 2 for Ubuntu 15.10 on my PPA

Jens, not likely.

Digikam 5 need much more updated versions of QT5 and the KF5 framework that it would be too much for my PPA to backport to Ubuntu 14.10.

Re: Packages of Digikam 5 beta 2 for Ubuntu 15.10 on my PPA

Philip Johnsson
Question to users of my PPA with Digikam packages for Ubuntu.

I'm working on packages of Digikam 4.14.0 and Digikam 5 beta 6 for Ubuntu 16.04 (xenial) and it looks like there will be problems using outdated Marble with qt4 support that Digikam 4.14.0 use for maps in the geolocation feature. Looks like Marble that support QT4 have a bug with google maps API and therefor doesn't show google maps in Digikam but other map features work.

Do you guys want the geolocation feature with the google map bug or should I disable geolocation all together as with the official ubuntu Digikam packages for digikam 4.12.0? Digikam 5 beta 6 will have full geolocation features.

Regards,

Philip

Nice to know!

Have fun discovering the future of Digikam! :)

All features except multimedia support are enable as far as I know. I have to look into enabling it as right now ubuntu 15.10 give conflicting binary symbols as mixed versions of gstreamer will load at the same time and crash digikam 5. Hopefully I can enable it in a coming update.

I suppose at some point Digikam 5 will come out of beta and we won't need Digikam 4 installed anyway.

I would say that it is better to have some geolocation function without Google maps than no geolocation at all.

With 5.0.0, there is no more libkgeomap dependency. Code is integrated as well in digiKam core.

The puzzle with the rest of KDE is over.

Hi Philip,

I tried updating digikam to 4.14 on Ubuntu 16.04 this morning and ran into problems with installing through apt.  I tried to to an upgrade after adding in your PPA and that failed with an apt error.  I then removed your PPA, updated and then apt removed digikam, removing 4.12.

I then added your PPA back in and still couldn't install digikam 4.14, some of the errors:

Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/digikam_4%3a4.14.0-xenial~ppa3_amd64.deb
 /var/cache/apt/archives/digikam-data_4%3a4.14.0-xenial~ppa3_all.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

So I'm wondering if this is related to the issue of the geolocation?

I personally aren't using this capability, but I'm still learning my way around digikam and for the most part happy to wait on a solution before upgrading to 4.14 or 5.

Peter.
