No EXIF/XMP info in "Metadata" sideview

Peter Albrecht
Hi list!

can anybody confirm this behaviour with digiKam 4.2.0?

If select a photo (e.g. "myPhoto.jpg") in Album-View, the
"Metadata" side view on the right side does not show any
EXIF or XMP information of this image. The list of metadata
is totally blank.

On the console
   # exiv2 -p a myPhoto.jpg
lists lots of "Exif...." and "Xmp..." lines.

The strang thing is: The "Metadata" side view does show
"Makernote" and "IPTC" metadata for "myPhoto.jpg"

I tried all filter modes in the "Metadata" side view:
  - "No filter"
  - "Photograph"
  - "Custom"
=> the list of metadata keeps blank.

The "Search..." filter-input-control is empty.

I went to "Settings -> Configure digikam... -> Metadata ->
Display" and for EXIF viewer, I...
  - selected all ("Select All" Button)
  - selected none ("Clear" Button)
  - tried the default ("Default" Button)
=> the list of EXIF metadata keeps empty all the time.

On the other hand, digiKam could read the metadata some way:
The tooltip in album view does show sane values for
"Aperture", "Focal", "Exposure" and "Sensitivity".

Before I file a bug report, I wanted to check whether I
missed another configuration option.

I use digiKam 4.2.0 with KDE 4.12.5 on gentoo linux.

Hi Jean-Pierre,

thanks for the feedback. So it is not only me. :)

I filed a bug report:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=338783

If you want, it would be good, to see your confirmation
there, too.

Regards,

Re: No EXIF/XMP info in "Metadata" sideview

Gian Paolo Sanino Vattier
Jean-Pierre and Peter, did you try with "Images / reRead Metadata from
image". I recall having something like what you described (DK 4.2.0 and
OpenSuse13.1), and I got the metadata right sideview displayed normally
after using this option on the menu.

Also, had some issues with thumbnails not being shown, that I solved by
deleting thumbnails-digikam.db and letting it sit a couple of hours
generating them again.

Hope this helps on your case.

Hi Gian Paolo Sanino,

thanks for your reply.
But "Images / reRead Metadata from image" did not fix
the problem.

Re: No EXIF/XMP info in "Metadata" sideview

Simon Cropper-3
Peter,

rename the file and put it into a new sub-album under your main album.
Do you still have the problem? [if it fixes the problem it is artifacts
in the database that is confusing digikam]

If so, post a link to an uploaded file for others to see if the metadata
is standard format and can be read by others [if it is only one file, it
has occurred that the metadata has become corrupt causing the libraries
used to extract metadata to baulk].

Is this the only file with this problem or does every file on your
system behave the same?

Hi Simon,

thanks for your answer.

I don't think, it is a database error, since I deleted my
digiKam database and had it rebuild with digiKam 4.2.0 from
the metadata in my image files.

All files are affected. Totally new ones, taken today, and
images I took 10 years ago. Those old images worked fine
with digiKam 3.5.0.

I put down a lot of details at:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=338783

Regards,
        Peter
