Need photograph files including GPS informations...

Gilles Caulier-2
Hi all,

I have completed a new GPS info viewer in digiKam 0.9.0 alpha. This one
display the world location where have been taken the photo on a small world
map. With a button, you can send a request to mapguest.com web service to
display an advanced map of the location using an external konqueror session.

There is a screenshot of the GPS tool in action at this url :

http://digikam3rdparty.free.fr/Screenshots/digikam0.9.0-alpha8.png

To test this tool, i have used only 3 jpeg files including GPS info (found on
the web (:=)))... I need to test my implementation using anothers files. If
you have any files including GPS info, please let's me hear...

Thanks in advance

Wow! I studied biology and was in Portugal with two profs. We took a
gazillion photos of plants and always noted the gps-coordinates down and
later one matched them with the jpeg-files. This would have beed a *very*
cool integrated solution! (well, we didn't have a gpg-sensor for our dSLR,
but next time we would).

I cannot test the code right now (because of time). Perhaps you can create a
close-up of the digikam interface itself so that I could give you feedback?

Such advanced things are exactly what is missing in digikam to convince my
profs :)

Hi Gilles,

I've put some GPS-infos intoe some of my photograph with the ExifTool. You can
test it yourself by editing using it from this page:

http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/

Use it like this: <path>/exiftool ->TAG>=<parameter> file.jpg

greets, Christoph

This let me think about this feature the other way round: Have a map and tag
images by clicking on it(?)

To 0.9.0 all metadata sidebar tab are read only. Writting capabilities are
planed later than 0.9.0.

About GPS tools, we need to have a better feedback before to start any
improvements. I'm sure that digiKam users any viewpoints about.

Hi Gilles,

Cameras with GPS might be not very often, and not in consumer/prosumer-areas
like us but more in the highend-systems, so I think it would be really
difficult to get "real" gps-photographs :-)

Just clicking on map wouldn't be very precise. Still think use of Google
maps would be the best short term solution. Click button to open
localization in browser (since there are problems with Konqueror it
would require separate configuration); accept dropped link from browser
to set coordinates contained in URL.

Google map support latitude/longitude method to locate a world position but
the service is uncomplete actually (see FAQ). This is why i have used
mapquest.

I have seen to the web that any pro-camera can be connected to GPS device.
Another recent camera have a GPS embeded.

What cameras do you know about this? I know that Nikon has a GPS module for
their pro cams and there are some PDA/Smartphones and some specialists like
RICOH Caplio Pro G3 where you can plug in a CF-GPS-card. Today the normal
method I know to combine GPS and EXIF are GPS tracklog files - a simple
textfile containing date, time and positions from an external GPS receiver.
There are some programs reading the tracklog file comparing date/time
informations to EXIF date and time and then integrating the positions into
the EXIF.

:-)
Then you take your EXIF pics use a digiKam modules like Vasco da Gama for
Windows
http://www.schnittpunkt.de/Systemhaus/software/Vasco_da_Gama.htm
and create nice walk-along animations for your photo presentation movies.
:-)

No need for integrated GPS to use it, see this page
http://freefoote.dview.net/linux_gpscorr.html
With this SW one can, per automatic time correlation, extract GPS data from
any commercial receiver track data to match the photographs, Just keep the
clocks in sync!

Well, i think we can add some informations like this in the next digiKam
handbook. I will add this point in handbook TODO list.
