More on Windows and digiKam

Presuming the Windows KDE team can keep things more current (it's now 9 months since an update for digiKam), they load the most basic installation with dozens of programs that I have no need for, nor probably do most other Windows users. After installing the Windows compiled version I deleted my KDE folder and then cleaned the registry. It took about twelve minutes just to DELETE files! To be honest, I don't know why any Windows user wants or needs KDE (except for digiKam, of course!) It is a huge resource user, even in the compiled version.

So far I don't use much in the digiKam feature set other than basic corrections and tagging. But I can tell you that subjectively the compiled for Windows version is MUCH more stable than the KDE for Windows versions. I can also let it sit unused for a couple of days now. Upon clicking in the taskbar, it does take a minute to wake up, but then there it is, rested and ready to go.

BTW, didn't I read that digiKam is now able to read 48 bit images? I don't seem to have that ability. Did I make that up?

Thanks to the team for a great product!

Why not to shot in RAW+JPEG ?

Because it takes more memory space on the camera storage card and its
slower.

Does DigiKam use separate xmp files (sidecards) like some other programs
(Lr, darktable, etc)?
I think all the info generate during the use of DigiKam is stored in the .db
and writing to the file is optional.

I ask this question because my collection is growing and I fear that if the
.db gets corrupted and I haven't written the tags, captions, etc to the
files I will loose everything.

Thanks.

Hello Digikam developers and users,

I wanted to let you know a potential opportunity to leverage external
resources to improve Digikam. This might be useful with Digikam 2.0 on the
horizon. It's worth a look.

Vivek

Why not... We must talk about some taks to do in digiKam, not too complex.

The thead is open. let's go to proposals...

- updating the DigiKam handbook
- creating in depth comparisons between DigiKam and other software

For me, improved my windows install setup (currently experimental) :

http://digikam3rdparty.free.fr/misc.tarballs/digikam1.6.0-kde4.4.exe

currently created with 7zip. This archiver can be scripted, and
applications must be created on windows desktop and menu.

Also, i would a little process to patch registry base to add digiKam
in application list from system dialog when an USB device is plugged.

Is there anything they could do to assist with getting new versions of digiKam distributed to Windows users faster? Or is that too complicated, or even impossible?

Gilles,

I think it is a very good idea, maybe nsis could be used instead of a
simple zip:
http://nsis.sourceforge.net/Main_Page

It is easy to add icons to the start menu, to register the application
into windows etc...
