Light Table - what's it for?

This may sound a bit of a silly question but... What's the Light Table
for?

Then on a different subject completely what's the easiest Linux app
for pixel editing of a picture?  I need something rather more 'bit by
bit' than the "remove artefact" tool in Inpainting.

OK, thank you Gilles.  Now I understand, it's basically an easy way
compare two images selected out of a range of images.
