Installing Digikam on a Mac

tosca
Hello,

I would like to install Digikam on a Mac for a friend, and I don't know anything about Mac ... ;-)
Can you provide some guidelines.

Thanks a lot,
Marie-Noelle

It easy, but long. I already do it on my macbook.

You need to install macport. digiKam is available on this project.
There is no digiKam DMG file (i open an entry for next GSoC 2011 about
this subject)

http://www.macports.org/

macport is like gentoo : you compile and install application. macport
resolve all depencies automatically. all is installed in /opt to be
sure to not touch core system.

As you will compile all application and dependencies, you must install
Apple compiler in first : XCode. All is explained here:

http://www.macports.org/install.php

Installing digikam through macport want mean to checkout and compile
all depencies, including last KDE4 and Qt4. This is why it's take a
while.

digiKam macport maintainer is Jan Gosmann <jan hyper-world de>.

Read here that digiKam 1.9.0 run under mac with KDE 4.6.1 :

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=266735

Gilles, thanks for your answer.

I will transfer it my friend, hoping she will succeed in installing it by herself. Otherwise, I'll advise her to suscribe to the list, as I won't have access to her computer before a couple of months.

Gilles,

My friend seems to think she'll need to buy a program called xcode (99€) to install macport. Is that the case ?

Not correct. A OSX developer account costs money and comes with XCode free. You can get XCode 4 from the App Store for $5 and XCode 3 is still a free download if you sign up with a free developer account. You just need the compilers though and you can download them from hpc.sourceforget.net.

I downloaded XCode from apple developer web site. It's free. No need
to pay for that...

XCode 3 is free. The new XCode 4 with updated llvm compilers and debugger is not free ($5).

Re: Installing Digikam on a Mac

In reply to this post by Gilles Caulier-4
We need a software to manage a database of photos for a scientific association. It'll be used by volunteers who will work for the association for one or two months, none of them being a developer. About 10 to 12 different computers will be used, some Mac, others PC (I think I'll be the only one working with Linux).

I suggested Digikam as I know it works on the 3 platforms. It has also the advantage of the Piwigo-export that'll be very handy to upload the photos into the online gallery.

But if Digikam is too complicate to install for non-developers who will be working with it for a couple of months only, we may use any other software on the "front-office" computers, to sort, tag and rename the photos; before loading them in the "database" computer. Unless I'm mistaken, it doesn't matter whether one photo has been tagged by one program or another, as long as the tags are actually written in the file metadata, and the program used by the "main" computer can retrieve them.
But it could be trikier for the management team to manage volunteers who won't use the same program ...
