Impressions about importing pictures

Dotan Cohen
Today I ran the import pictures wizard for the first time. I have some
constructive criticism to help make Digikam better.

1) There is no option to delete the photos from the camera. This
necessitates a redundant step for the user: to remove the photos
manually. If he forgets, then there is a chance that the photos will
be reimported to digikam.

2) In the options dialog, there is the possibility to create new
albums based upon date, with the options of ISO, full text, and local
settings. However, the user has no idea how this will look in the end.
A sample example of each option would be nice.

3) I cannot select Download All Photos, it is greyed out. So I must
Select All and then Download selected. How can we enable Download All?

There is a file in Bugzilla about this subject. Planed...

Use the tool tip for details, or take a look into handbook.

Yes, it's a bug. Must be fixed.

Good, thanks. I should have looked there first.

I cannot seem to build the handbook. It stops at 0% and says that it
is finished. It may be a locale problem, I'll play with it a bit.

That might be the best documentation that I've seen for any KDE app.
Very nice. I actually stopped looking at KDE handbooks about a year
ago because at that time they were useless and I found that I didn't
have the time to commit changes (though I tried).

In any case, in reference to the relevant page:
http://docs.kde.org/development/en/extragear-graphics/digikam/using-camera.html#id2551057

There is no mention of what the folder structure will look like with
the different options. Maybe when I discover for myself I'll try to
commit the info the the Digikam handbook. Can I get commit access?
