Import labels tree from external files

Marco Uliana

Dear Digikam users, I am new both to DigiKam and to KDE (I am running them on Windows Vista OS).

I am searching the best software to manage my collection of zoological photos and I am evaluating DigiKam against similar products, mainly IDimager.

My first question is: is there a way to import a tree of hierarchical labels from an external file (excel table, csv file, etc.)? I ask this because I have a complete taxonomic tree containing thousands of names, which I want to directly implement in my photo organizing software.

Thanks for your help, Marco

I think importing tags (tree hierarchical) from external file is not
possible in digiKam at present. I was seeking some time ago (at
0.10.0 stage) similar function to import taxonomical tree with
vascular plants, which I use to tag my photos. Well, I did not find
it. Regards,

Re: Import labels tree from external files

I also have looked and was unable to find an easy way to use an existing file to create a list of hierarchical tags.  If you look in the help menu there is an item that gives you a summary of the database.  The tags for your photos can be written to the individual photos but they are also kept in the datebase to make searching quick.  The database is I understand it an SQLite database and I was wondering if it's possible to just create an SQLite database, using the DigiKam data structure, from your file and then dropping the database in the folder were you'll put your photos?  Maybe someone here who knows more about the DigiKam database could help you.

Notice that to have hierarchical tags your tags have to be XMP and not IPTC.  I believe I have see commercial products that will import tags from another file maybe you could use a trial version of one of those programs to tag some of your photos and then just scan those photos into DigiKam which will build a hierarchical list for you from the tags in the photos.

I'm experimenting with DigKam now in Kubuntu as the the ability to do a search by just drawing a polygon on a map would be really useful but of course the existing maps lack sufficient scale to accomplish what I need.

I'm using Microsoft Live Photo Organizer right now (you should have it as it's installed with Vista) as I'm required to use Widows XP at work and the Microsoft product is free.  I use it because the tagging is drag and drop which is very easy once you have entered all of your tags.  Also the search tools (you can select tags any where in the hierarchy and then use a boolean search on that or even just a boolean search from the taskbar search window and not even open the photo program) are pretty good as well.  Once I'm convinced that DigiKam is reliable I'll probably switch to that as it's feature set is much more complete.

You can use the exiv2 command line tool to update the tags that Digikam
stores in XMP. I am not sure whether you want to just import your tag
structure, or directly apply them to the images, but this method works
both ways.

For each image, create a text file, containing your tags. Subtags are
given as "parent/child/grandchild":
set Xmp.digiKam.TagsList[1] animal
set Xmp.digiKam.TagsList[2] animal/elephant
set Xmp.digiKam.TagsList[3] size/big
set Xmp.digiKam.TagsList[4] eats/food/peanuts

Then simply call:
exiv2 -m yourfile yourimage

And the tags are in the image. Note that the image only gets the tag
"size" if you also set "size" on its own instead of just "size/big". You
can extend the file to also write the tags to xmp subject and other
places, take a look at the exiv2 manpage.

If you just want to import all of your tag structure and apply them to
images in Digikam, simply create a dummy image and apply all of your
tags to it, then Digikam will import the tags and you can use them on
other images.

Hope that helps,

Michael

PS: Be sure to do "Images->Re-read metadata from image" when you have
changed the metadata using exiv2.

R: Import labels tree from external files

In reply to this post by jim junk

Thanks for your answers

Some points:

-          my system says that the help file does not exist. Where can I get such a file?

-          I want just to import my tag hierarchy (I will manually tag images)

-          My tag hierarchy will contain more than 10000 terminal branches and hundreds of intermediate branches so:

o   Is it possible to quickly apply all these tags to a dummy image as suggested by, Michael G. Hansen, and then use them to tag the rest of my images?

Thanks, Marco

Did you also try to choose Openstreetmap for the maps
(though I am not sure whether this is already present
in the currently available digikam in kubuntu).

And if there is any detail missing, just contribute
to openstreetmap, see eg
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Beginners'_Guide  ;-)

I just tried it with 1110 tags and it worked. You will have to split
your 10k tags into several images, because XMP appears to be limited to
65536 bytes (it contains not only the tags, but also XMP markup around
each tag, which can be considerably more!). Digikam did not respond for
about 20 seconds when reading the tags from the image.

Of course you will need some way to convert your tag-data into the
format for exiv2, probably using some sort of script. And backup the
database before you do the import, in case anything goes wrong.

Greetings,

Mike

Short C++ program to generate tags for testing:

#include <iostream>
#include <fstream>
#include <string>

using namespace std;

int main(int argc, char* argv[])
{
    ofstream outstream;
    outstream.open("bla1.cmd");

    int counter = 1;
    for (int i = 0; i<10; ++i)
    {
        std::string istring = "a";
        istring[0]+=i;
        outstream<<"set Xmp.digiKam.TagsList["<<counter<<"]
"<<istring<<endl;
        counter++;

        for (int j=0; j<10; ++j)
        {
            std::string jstring = "a";
            jstring[0]+=j;
            outstream<<"set Xmp.digiKam.TagsList["<<counter<<"]
"<<istring<<"/"<<istring<<jstring<<endl;
            counter++;

            for (int k=0; k<10; ++k)
            {
                std::string kstring = "a";
                kstring[0]+=k;
                outstream<<"set Xmp.digiKam.TagsList["<<counter<<"]
"<<istring<<"/"<<istring<<jstring<<"/"<<istring<<jstring<<kstring<<endl;
                counter++;
            }
        }
    }
    outstream.close();
    return 0;
}

I have no experience with the windows version of DigKam but I'd go back to the web site and see if there is a separate help file other wise I don't know.

Yes, when you import a photograph Digikam scans it for tags and then adds any tags it finds to the DigiKam tag list.  Those tags then become available for future tagging.

There is a choice I believe for google maps or open street maps for geocoding photos but I didn't see that option for the marble applet to find photos.   I'd be happy to be wrong.  I have some geospacial experience and would be willing to add a georectified raster or vector map to use locally if that is possible.

At least from beta 6 (rev.: 1032854M) the "Map searches"
has a button "Map settings" where one can select Openstreetmap.

As far as I know, there is now support currently for additional
maps (Though in principle this should be doable when
marble supports the corresponding kml elements
(GroundOverlay and LatLonBox) ).

Yes!  Thank you, I found the button with the menu.  For me, professionally, this is the killer feature.  To be able to find that handful of photos that were taken in a given area out of a gallery of tens of thousands; well it's way better than fantastic.  I've been waiting for this feature for many, many years and to have been able to find it in an open source program is really great.

Two more questions if you have the time.  The first is not too important but compared to Open streets in Firefox the applet in DigiKam is much slower to download images and the images are not as sharp.  Is that a problem on my end or is it just a problem with the applet.

The second issue is much more important as I have a dialup connection at work and I'm not sure that the Open Streets option will be functional with the slow dialup speeds.  I use the Google Earth application at work but I'm able to run it from the cache.  I brought the box home and put it on the home network, were I have ADSL and then ran Google Earth over my area of concern so it cached the aerials that I need for work.  Note that I'm only interested in an area that's about 16 by 12 kilometres.  Will I be able to do the same with Open Streets?  Is there some option to have Open Streets, or the applet look locally for maps?

Again thanks for your assistance.

The blurriness is a known issue, it depends on the zoom factor. There is
a patch for Marble which should resolve this issue, but I am not
up-to-date about when it will be applied.

Yes, tiles are cached and can be used offline. You might want to
open the Marble application to control the cache settings first. Also,
it does not matter whether you browse the area in the Marble application
or in digikam. I think work is also going on in Marble to do batch
downloads of tiles.
