How to use the RAW converter

tosca
Am trying to use the RAW converter for the first time, on CR2 files I just import from my EOD 450D, but the RAW converter batch tool doesn't seem to be active. When I select one or several CR2 photos, the Outils -> Convertisseur d'image RAW remains inactive.

What am I doing wrong?

Re: How to use the RAW converter

Seems to work after trying to upgrade to 1.4.0 Digikam version then reversing to 1.2.0 version.
I know need to learn how to use it.

Is there some documentation available somewhere, considering I'm a complete newbie in RAW processing?

Thanks for helping,
Marie-Noëlle

There is a brief section on raw processing in the digikam docs.

For general information, google led me to these online sources:

Thanks for your answer, but it's the Digikam procedure I'm stuck with.

When trying to edit a raw picture:
 - no function in the first tab ("Décodage brut" in french) seems to modify the picture ... or the preview reflects no change,
 - second tab ("Post-traitement" in french) functions do modify the preview, but there is no save options available!?

So I don't understand how to proceed to make some adjustement before saving my picture.

Thanks for any idea.

First, the raw converter prepares the image for the image editor, you are not
yet in the image editor when doing raw conversion...

In the digikam raw converter, the first tab has a button 'update' which
applies the changes you made. No direct update, as the conversion can take
quite some time, especially when you select the option to rebuild the
highlights. (I think this is because a number of changes has to be applied
before the matrix interpolation and to the full image data)
The post-processing tab only has actions that are relatively fast so direct
preview is possible (also because the modifications can be done on the preview
image)

To get the image in the image editor, use the 'import', this will generate the
full image and open it in the image editor, where you can finish adjusting it
and save it (at the very least I apply some sharpening before saving, and
perspective or lens corrections, cropping if needed, etc.)

Hope this helps

Remco

This has helped a lot to understand how it works.

However, as a complete newbie to raw, I feel very handicapped at not seeing immediately the results of every modification. For white balance for example, sliding cursors back and forth has no meaning for me if I can't preview the resulting effect on the image.
Lack of documentation is also an issue.
I'm really willing to switch from jpeg to raw, but I'm still struggling to get some result.

Thanks to those who have directed me to the "Meet the Gimp" videos, I think I'll give a try to the Gimp ufraw plugin, that seems much more easy to use (wysiwyg at least).

But I find another way, or more accessible documentation, I'll be happy to go back to Digikam to do the raw treatment.

And, by the way, ufraw is able to store the settings you made in a
seperate file. So if you want to change some settings, like
whitebalance, curve adjustment or similar, you can open the ufraw config
file and change the settings. You don't have to start from scratch.

I use ufraw/gimp combo to edit the photos and digikam to manage and
preview them. With this I got the best of all.

That is true, and that is why I am not using digikam to convert raw
files. In addition to the gimp plugin mentioned you may also want to
check out rawtherapee and also ufraw is available as a standalone
program. After trying all three I have settled on rawtherapee for raw
conversions. My workflow is essentially: raw -> rawtherapee -> 16 bit
tiff -> digikam -> 8 bit jpg.

To elaborate: I initially import all raw files into digikam, but use
rawtherapee for conversion and WB/exposure adjustments. I save as 16
bit tiff for further editing within digikam, then export to 8 bit jpg
for publishing to flickr.

Perhaps more work, but I am very happy with the results.

Martin and Darren, thank you for your feedback.

Considering I'm a complete newbie on the matter, I'm much more comfortable knowing I'm not alone having some problem with the raw treatment in Digikam.
Hopefully, it will be improved in a future release.

Re: How to use the RAW converter

I have a question for those who use ufraw or another non-proprietary tool: have you found the icc files for your camera, or do you use the DNG converter provided by Digikam?

I've found a lot of icc files on the Canon CD, but I don't know which ones I must use for the EOS 450D.

So if you have any hint or advice ...

Thanks,

Jep, I found the icc files and I used them for testing and for one
shooting.

I don't use the DNG converter as this brings horrible results from my
cr2 files. I test it every now and then, but the white balance as well
as the exposure is a total mess.

I tried Adobes DNG converter as well (on my windows VirtualBox). The
results are much better but not as good as the original raws.

>
> I've found a lot of icc files on the Canon CD, but I don't know

If you really want to take the step into colour management throw away
the canon icc files. The results are not as good as the default ufraw
color-matrix. Only in some strange highlight situations they are
better.

Default icc files for a camera are not a good idea. Either you
calibrate and profile your camera under the circumstances you use it or
the main benefit of colour management - getting a well defined
reproduction of the colour - is not guaranteed.

BTW: then you have to go the next step and have to calibrate and
profile your monitor, scanner and printer as well. And you no longer
can use the cheap photo labs as they don't care about colour
management.

I bought me an IT8 target for the camera and the scanner and a
colorimeter to set my monitor (a cheap spyder 2) to have an almost
calibrated environment. With the IT8 target I create icc files for my
camera myself and at least with ufraw they are working. With the
digikam raw converter the results are crap  - so as I don't use it I
can live with this.

And to my own icc files: I am not always satisfied with them. It is not
that easy to take a good picture which is usable for calibrating and
profiling.

...

Thank you very much for your anwer and all the explanations.

I will try to keep things simple though, as I only take very amateurish pictures to publish them online (and obviously very few visitors have calibrated screens).
I just want to "upgrade" from the standard JPEG to something a bit better, that allows me to do some modifications on the computer after shooting (white balance, exposure, etc.)

RAW treatment is entirely new for me (and I'm not very experienced at photos too) and I'm struggling to get the basics working.

So your help has been very much appreciated.
