How to open RAW file in the Gimp?

Jacek Poplawski-2
Dear Digikam users and developers,

I am doing photos for a few years and I use Linux only. For a long
time I was just using gqview to browse photos and Gimp to edit them.
Now I am after session with RAW files, and gqview doesn't work anymore
for me, so I asked people on forums and groups about alternatives, I
tried some of them, but only digikam seams to work correctly.

However, I am totally confused with its user interface. I am not a KDE
user (I use xfce4).

I am able to open album with JPEG and RAW files, but for some reason
RAW files are created differently - digikam allows me only to open
them in showphoto. What I want to do is to open it in Gimp, so Gimp
will use ufraw plugin and I could edit my photo and store created JPEG
file somewhere.

I tried to find some kind of options or preferences, I was looking
into to menus two or three times. Sure, there are options, but nothing
about applications to use with given file formats.

Could you tell me what's the fastest way to open RAW file visible in
Digikam in any other application than showphoto? I use .orf files if
that matters. The only way I found for now is to do it manually from
bash.

What you need to do is to associate the raw file's mime type with
gimp-remote. I'm not sure if this is a file-association for kde only,
but the way to do it in KDE(3) is to go to the system configuration ->
default applications -> file associations and then search for the raw
mime types. If it doesn't exist, you may have to create one.

If you're running xfce4 you might try starting "kcontrol". I don't
understand why digikam doesn't have a quick link to this configuration
control, but perhaps this has never been put in a proper bug-report?

Cheers

Thanks for reply.
In that case i have no other choice but to download over 100MB of
software to install KDE and find kcontrol, currently I don't have it
on my disk.
Already downloading, will write later will that help.

I installed and run whole KDE4.
orf files are associated with rawstudio and ufraw, I added Gimp.
Nothing changed in Digikam, still can open it only with showphoto :(
Any tips?

Re: How to open RAW file in the Gimp?

Gilles Caulier-4
There is no reason to import RAW file in gimp... especially because it doesn't support 16 bits color depth. It's really weird to import and edit RAW file in 8 bits...

With new RAW import tool from digiKam based on libraw, there is no advantage to switch to ufraw.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/digikam/3162004701/sizes/o/

Also, Gimp support, preserve, and manage all Metadata ? digiKam use Exiv2 since a long time now, and metadata management is very important for photograph...

Hmm, for me there are two reasons to use the gimp rather than digikam
for RAW conversion:
1: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=165650
2: ufraw's ui is (for me) more intuitive for RAW import than digikam's
interface

Everyone has their own reasons and preferences ;-)

I mostly use the gimp for when I want to print my photos, so then the
metadata isn't that important, but the gimp does preserve some/most of
them AFAIK.

Cheers

What's is more intuitive in UFRAW than digiKam ? I really know what exactly ? Are you tested current development version from digiKam ?

I promise I will take some more time to look at it and report my
findings, but reason 1 and lack of time do cause delays for a proper report.

I only recently updated my digikam to the latest (KDE3) development
version, but I try to keep up now.

One of the main things that ufraw does better than digikam is that every
update in the controls has an almost immediate effect on the preview
image (though my CPU does cause delays, but I hope to have that fixed
soon! ;-) )

Of course, I've been using ufraw a lot more for processing RAW than
digikam's recent raw import ui, so I'm more experienced in ufraw.

Cheers

You may think so, but I don't understand why it's not possible?

Ufraw has one important advantage - it works. Other applications
doesn't recognize my .orf from E-520, maybe because older version of
exiv2 in Arch Linux.

This depends on libraw, not on exiv2. Look under your digiKam help menu:
->Supported RAW cameras if you can find your camera. In my version libraw 0.7a
the E-520 is supported

E520 work fine here. I have some samples to test. this is not a valable argument (:=)))

update libkdcraw to last stable release...

I installed current version of libdkcraw and wasn't able to run
digikam anymore, so I tried to recompile it and:

In file included from /opt/kde/include/libkdcraw/kdcraw.h:40,
                 from dimg.cpp:46:
/opt/kde/include/libkdcraw/libkdcraw_export.h:31:1: warning:

In file included from /usr/include/libkdcraw/dcrawbinary.h:33,
                 from dimg.cpp:45:
/usr/include/libkdcraw/libkdcraw_export.h:32:1: warning: this is the
location of the previous definition
In file included from dimg.cpp:45:
/usr/include/libkdcraw/dcrawbinary.h:40: error: function definition
does not declare parameters
In file included from /opt/kde/include/libkdcraw/kdcraw.h:32,
                 from dimg.cpp:46:
/opt/qt/include/qimage.h: In member function 'bool
QImageTextKeyLang::operator<(const QImageTextKeyLang&) const':
/opt/qt/include/qimage.h:58: warning: suggest parentheses around && within ||
dimg.cpp: In static member function 'static Digikam::DImg::FORMAT
Digikam::DImg::fileFormat(const QString&)':
dimg.cpp:496: error: 'KDcrawIface::DcrawBinary' has not been declared

I am a programmer and I can try to fix errors, but the question is -
will stable version of digikam work with current libdckraw?
