How to make digikam show all images in a folder?

Daniel Bauer-2
Hello,

I use digikam 1.8 on opensuse 11.3.

I have an album with 75 *.JPG images, i import (using digikam import-tool)
other versions of the same images named *.jpg. They are imported, I can see
all images in dolphin, always one *.JPG and one *.jpg, but digikam still only
shows 75 images - some *.jpg and some *JPG, a wild mix, I don't know if there
is any system...

However, pressing F5 doesn't change anything. Closing digikam and opening it
again, neither. I put "search for new images at start" in settings, close
digikam, open it again - still only 75 images... also, choosing to refresh all
thumbnails of thealbum only refreshes those that are already shown...

what can I doo to make digikam show all images that are in the folder?

Thanks and kind regards

Daniel

This would give an ugly name clash on windows, were case is ignored.
Normally one should avoid such situations for portability reasons.

Still digikam could try to show both images and maintain them, there
would be no portable way accross operating systems, which is a requirement.

Do we now have to suffer from the restrictions of a stupid accumulation of
program code that some people for unknown reasons call "operation systems"?
Hey, except for W-users the world is not in MS-DOS times anymore, why go back
to there?

I use the normal filename behaviour (a is not = A) very often, for example to
have several versions of the same images listed side by side.

I don't think linux should behave like this Wsomething. And even that "system"
can distinguish capitalisation when it comes to passwords or internet-URLs
(even msie will show a file not found if you enter "image.JPG" when it is
named "image.jpg" on the server...). In fact I don't see a reason why I'd have
to add a lot of work in renaming images (i.e. to *_version_x.jpg) just because
one company isn't capable to understand the differences between characters...

I think digikam should stay a linux program using linux conventions. W-users
are used to the fact that nothing works, so I think one should leave it up to
them to name their files according to the restrictions of their "system".

For me it is very very strange if one program suddenly doesn't understand my
filenames anymore that are not problem at all on any operating system... I
havn't seen this in any other program on linux...

Pkease re-think about this...

kind regards

Daniel

Personally, I wouldn't dare keep two images with the "same" name, only distinguished by case. Perhaps Linux is consistent enough for this to be safe, but I would worry that sooner or later something would overwrite one of them.

For example, are sqlite and mysql searches case sensitive? DB searches often aren't, and don't have to be part of any OS conventions.

However, it would be good if digiKam at least detected the situation and warned you.

Perhaps as a workaround you could divide them into a subfolder for each case.

I openned (in dolphin) a new folder in the digikam tree, copied 6
images there. Then copied the same images again, renaming them to have
a JPG where the other have a jpg extension.

Digikam displays the 12 images without problem.

so there must be something else.

did you use an external disk, may be FAT32 or the main ext4 disk?

As "jdd" already pointed out and I could confirm in a small test, digikam is
without a problem capable to display xy.png and xy.PNG side by side. We dont
use IgnoreCase comparisons anywhere to my knowledge.
So I cannot reproduce here, there must be some special context triggering the
problem.

Isn't it a bit like the problem I reported earlier: Digikam couldn't find some .jpg files recently created.
Once I deactivated an export module / relaunch Digikam / reactivate the module, everything was fine again.

Hello,

I did some tests, and I can reproduce it everytime. Always with the same
result.

For testing I made a sample folder (test) containg 75 small blurred images
(nothing to see :-) ), made a black-and-white version in a new folder (test2)
and renamed them using mc to *.jpg.

http://www.daniel-bauer.com/test/test.zip (*.JPG) (500 KB)
http://www.daniel-bauer.com/test/test2.zip (*.jpg) (470 KB)

I've put these folders into my ~/Desktop folder (unzipped of course).

then:
- start digikam
- make new folder "00_test" in digikam root album
- Menu "Import", "Add Images"
  (choose folder ~/Desktop/test)
- ctrl-A to select all
- click "Download selected" (choose folder "00_test)
- close import-tool

75 images are importedand shown

again:
- Menu "Import", "Add Images"
  (choose folder ~/Desktop/test2)
- ctrl-A to select all
- click "Download selected" (choose folder "00_test)
- close import-tool

still only 75 images, but a mix of images from the first and from the second
import...

Can you reproduce?

regards

Daniel

I have no problem here with your photos, I can see any of them, copied
with the system or with digikam

howaver I must say I use openSUSE 11.3 standard digikam, that is
version 1.2, is that the same for you?

No I use version 1.8.0, KDE 4.6, Opensuse 11.3.
I didn't have the problems earlier, I know that it worked with 1.2 (I use to
work with capitalisation of the extension since "ever"). I don't know when the
problem started, but for sure at least since 1.7 it exists here...

Just to show... I have 3 folders containing the same images (75 *.JPG and 75
*.jpg each). The folders 00_test and 00_test2 were filled using digikam import
tool, folder 00_test3 created and filled in dolphin while digikam was closed.

As you can see on the screenshots the three folders show different images, a
different (random?) mix of JPG and jpg, although the contents of the folders
are exactly the same...

I can't explain this to me...

Of no help, but just for info.

In Dolphin I copied 6 *.jpgs within Digikam to an odds-and-sods album folder
and renamed to *.JPG. Then copied the same 6 again as *.jpg. In Dolphin all
showed in correct sequence.
Started Digikam, opened odds-and-sods. All .jpg & .JPG files displayed in
sequence.

Using Digi 1.8 on Kubuntu 10.10

Sorry can't be of more help
Jim

Marcel, do you use MySQL database?
It is a reproducible bug:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=268204

I could solve it for me with a change in the database of which I hope it
wouldn't have any negative side effects...

The collation IS case-INsensitive. filenames of upper/lower-case are treatened
the same, if the SELECT commands do not have a COLLATE statement. As mentioned
in my bug report, I'd recommend to add a COLLATE statement to all SELECT
commands in the database handling of digikam, OR to change teh collation of
case-sensivitve fields.

My test showed that this only applies to MySQL database. When using sqlite the
bug doesn't exist.

By the way: I was pointed to this by a hint on the OpenSuse-Mailing list by
members that were so kind to test with my test-folders...

kind regards...

Daniel
