How do I undelete an image?

Juhani Talvela
I deleted by mistake several images by moving them to trash bin (Del button). I
guess I have some chance to recover the deleted images. But where do I find the
trash bin...?

Cheers

Thank for the quick answer. And sorry not to grasp what you mean.
Dolphin...?? Locations panel...?

Do you mean that I should find "system trash" somewhere on the top menu?
I've tried to find it with no luck, so far.

Re: How do I undelete an image?

Bugzilla from rogersjd@gmail.com
As far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong), there is no undelete in
digikam itself. What JDD was saying is that digikam uses the systems
trash bin. It may vary depending on your distro, on Ubuntu, the trash
icon on the panel will contain the deleted images. Also found in
~/.local/share/Trash/files/

In the worst case (which could take a while) you could find them from
the command line, for example:
~$ find -iname IMG_*

Hello Juhani,

Simply go to wherever you normally browse your directory structure. Find the "Trash" folder and open it. Your deleted files should be in there somewhere.

* sometimes the much-appreciated individuals who graciously provide answers to our questions understandably forget that there is a vast disparity of experience out here and hence assume that we already know something which perhaps we don't.

* "thank-you" very much to everybody who helps! Please don't be frustrated when we have to ask for clarification about something which might seem to be quite basic to you ;-)

Fantastic. Thank you all three of you...:)

Now grasping what Dolphin is I was able to start it, find the deleted
pictures, and recover them. Didn't have any system trash on my desktop,
nor did I find it in /home/ or /usr/local/share.

Anyway, I've learned something and feel grateful. Keep up the good work!

Cheers

I don't know exactly where is the system trash located (may be is some
.local/share/Trash/ folder). Anyway, this folder is special, it's a
sort of database entry, remembering where the file was, and a right
clic allow to restore the file in place.

trueth is a link on the digikam menu should be a plus, I also had some
problems time ago, to understand the situation :-)

there is also a trash plasmoid that allows trash can configuration
(right clic on the desktop, add plasmoid, search for trash can -
depends of your langage)

Hi,

May be the first thing to do when you ask this kind of question is to say
which OS/distro you use. It's better to help you.

After that, I don't think KDE use a special trash... the system trash is
the system trash (it works with gnome and nautilus too).

With Ubuntu, you have a trash icon in the right down corner in the panel
bar, and generally, common file manager should have a shortcut in their
side panel.

Sorry for my questions, but I'm quite curious...
What operating system are you running? Is it gnu/linux?
If it's gnu/linux, what's your desktop environment?

It's quite strange that your file manager doesn't display any trash icon: Dolphin, on KDE Plasma desktop has it, Nautilus on Gnome (like on Ubuntu) has it too, and even Thunar on XFCE Desktop has this "feature"...
Are you running an LXDE desktop, like Lubuntu? AFAIK PCManFM on LXDE doesn't have trash so far.

Regards
gerlos

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with Gnome 2.30.2 both in Finnish.

Dolphin (the file manager) does display the trash folder, like jdd
suggested. But thats the only place where I've found it. Not on the
desktop, not in any other menu, not in those folders listed in my reply.
I don't really know where it should be, but am happy to have my pictures
back.

Cheers
Juhani

There's a plasma widget for the trash that you can add to your desktop
or task bar.

No need for plasma in GNOME.
In my Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (I've upgraded to 10.10 so I can't
confirm this behaviour) the Trashbin was an option for the
Desktop; right click on the desktop --> Configure --> opens
a window where on one of the tabs you can check to show
Trash (and Network if you like). Curiously those two are not
shown by default.
In Mint (with GNOME) you have to right-click on the main
menu button to access this tab (Places).

In 10.10 the Trash is located on the lower taskbar besides
the clock (lower-right). Think it is on by default, but not
very visible with dark themes.

Right-click, right-click, right-click (in any modern WM,
including the one from Redmond)... ;-)

Best regards

Sveinn í Felli

Slightly OT;
(posted here because I thought it somewhat relevant)

If you happen to accidentally delete your images/videos from
hard disk AND emptied your system trash OR viped your memory
card:
If you act quickly there are chances that you may recover
such files with PhotoRec Data Recovery Utility:
<http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec>

It's a low level FOSS application which can read data/files
outside of filesystem tree (raw disk data), the GUI is
textual but quite straightforward. In *buntu repositories
it's part of the TestDisk bundle.

I'm in no way connected to the devs, but this piece of
software has saved my ass many times, specially with camera
memory cards.

It also teaches you to never dump or sell your hard disks
without totally owerwriting them at least 3 times (or use a
sledgehammer)... ;-)

Best regards,

It saved me and my friends photos some times, and I agree with you, it's a good thing to know that  PhotoRec exists and it can help in case of trouble.

Right, it's always better to be safe than sorry ;-)

I think in this naive (meant in a positive way!) question lies a feature
request in hiding ;-)

"Wouldn't it be nice to have a panel/view with trashed pictures which
you can then choose to undelete?"

I think it's silly that an application using the trash can to delete
stuff is unable to do the opposite in a user-friendly manner...

Re: How do I undelete an image?

I use windows 7 with latest version of digikam.
I searched this information in the software documentation, also in the
forums and didn't find the answer.
I found the answer by chance:
In the album panel, you should have a trash directory: you just have to
select the deleted photo and click "restore"
