Geolocation - how to add/edit

Mick Sulley
How can I add or edit geolocation data?  I can see it displayed in the
right hand side bar but cannot see any way to edit or add to pictures
when nothing has been recorded.

Thanks
Mick

higlight the images and choose pictures/Geolocalisation (or similar)
from the menu. Then you can add the data, also by using gpx-files.

Re: Geolocation - how to add/edit

Mick Sulley
I found the menu option, Image > Geo-location.  If I choose a picture which has a location stored I can edit the Latitude, Longitude, etc, but if the image does not have any data the fields are grey and I cannot enter anything.  How can I add data, also how can I add data using gpx files?

Thanks
Mick

Hi Mick,

did you try to drag'n'drop the images to map in Geo-location?
Works fine here.

Best regards,
Andreas

Re: Geolocation - how to add/edit

Mick Sulley
I have a feeling I am missing something here.  If I select a picture
which does not have any geo data tehn the right hand panel is almost
blank, a bit of what looks like a map in top left of the panel, the Map
/ Satellite and + - buttons do nothing, no way to enter anything.  If I
drag and drop the image I get a 'no entry' symbol and it does nothing.

If I select an image which does have geo data then the map is displayed
and the Map / Satellite and + - buttons work (not very well but they
work), still cannot drag & drop but I guess that is expected.  If I then
select the original image again the map is still displayed but no
buttons work.

Is there some add on that I am missing?  I have Kipi plugins installed
an all enabled.

Thanks
Mick

What you might be missing is that the right hand panel is for *viewing* the
geolocation data of an image. On selection an image, the map view zooms in
rather strongly (2 steps from maximum), so you only see a very small part
of the map (and some parts of openstreetmap aren't all that detailed).

To *add* or modify geolocation data you would have to use the "Geolocation"
item from the "Image" menu. In the geolocation window, you have again
several right-hand tabs. For me, that window opens in the "GPS Correlator"
tab. To edit details for an image, I have to switch to the "Details" tab,
*and* select an image from the image list in the main panel (double click
works). Once that's done, all fields become selectable/editable. (Don't
forget to "apply" once you are ready to save the changes)

Re: Geolocation - how to add/edit

Mick Sulley
Got it!!

Yes it is the Image > Geo-location option, then select the image again,
but also there is a a check box 'Coordinates' which is grey until an
image is selected, then I have to check the box, only then I can enter
Latitude and Longitude,  and it works!!!  I cannot see the reason for
that check box.

As far as I can see it is not possible to add to multiple images
together, that would be very useful, is there a way to do that?

Also Martin mentioned adding by gpx files, can anyone tell em how to do
that.  I see that the data is held in ImagePositions table, so I guess I
could write something to load into that, I assume it should not cause
any problems??

Thanks you Remco and everyone else .

Hi,

you have a map window above the picture list. You just drag the
picture to the approprate location and drop it there. Of course you
should set the visible area to the location where the picture was
taken, and zoom in close enough so that you can drop it at the correct
place. Depending on whether you choose OSM or Google, the display will
be different, but both work fine.
The other option is ti use a gpx file. You load it into the window to
the right and then correlate. You may have to try out the time offset.
Sometimes the camera time is not accurate.

Re: Geolocation - how to add/edit

Mick Sulley
Having played around a bit I see what you mean.  I can get it to work using Marble Virtual Globe, but the detail on that just allows me to select the correct road but no closer.  Using Google maps, once I have selected an image that it can display, if I then select an image with no data it has the previous map, but if I try to move the area outside the original display is just blank.  I did try drag and drop onto the 'blank' map, and when I looked at the result it was in northern Canada, rather than central England as I wanted :-)

Thanks for your help anyway.  This aspect is of less concern now that I know a bit more about geolocation, I am currently working on a device to record the data and I will then use a script to match time/date and load it to database table, then probably find some way to tag existing images and bulk load to those as well

Cheers
Mick

I'm having the same problem. that's why I use a GPS tracker to record
my movements, which creates a gpx-file. This can be easily imported
into the Geo-localizer and then the pictures can be correlated to the
route. I use a simple smartphone app for that. Works almost perfectly.

Hi there,

yeah, I keep forgetting to tick this box and get surprised I can't enter
latitude/ longitude.

I don't think it's possible from the dialog box, it seems to always only
apply to the last image in a multi selection.
What you can do is right click on the image containing the right
coordinates already, and choose "copy coordinates", then select all the
other images you want to have the same coordinates, right click again
and "paste coordinates".
If you "move" your image onto the map, you can do this with multiple
images just fine.

I'm not sure I understand your question correctly, apologise if my
answer isn't what you meant.
I assume you want to correlate the data of a gpx track to the photos?
That's actually working quite neat. Once you are in the geolocalisation
there is a tab on the right tabs prob named "GPS Correlator" or similar.
Click on it, the top menu button in the tab then is "load gpx file". You
can chose multiple gpx files. Select all the images you want correlated,
then click "correlate", lust button in the tab. It uses the time stamp
in the images to correlate, if your camera isn't running the same time
as your gpx logger you obviously have to adjust for that (my camera's
time is usually way off, esp after crossing timezones :-)) ).

All the button names might vary, my digikam is running in German. ;-)
