Many thanks folks - I enjoy the discussion about workflow and other
softwares - would love to finally dump my windows XP. I will study the links provided by Gilles and see if I can make head or tails from them to enable xmp in DK. Martin - when you say you export to jpeg then tag (both raw and jpeg) does this mean you have to tag two different files (images)? I would want to tag an image only once - preferably the raw, and then have any photo derived from it to carry the original tags from the raw. You can see I'm not understanding how you do this. thanks, Jim On Mon, Jan 2, 2012 at 10:34 AM, Andrew Goodbody <[hidden email]> wrote: > Forwarding to list for Jim's benefit. > > Andrew > > _______________________________________________ > Digikam-users mailing list > [hidden email] > https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users > _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users |

Gilles was basically saying that the library that deals with metadata, Exiv2, has not been compiled with support for XMP. Exiv2 is not a part of digikam but is needed by digikam to work. So the next question is 'where did you get your version of digikam and supporting files and how did you install it on your machine?' Yes, I always tag two files (at least). But this is not that much work as it sounds. I simply have to select two (or even more files) and the rest of the work is the same as you only would tag one file. The point is: automatic tagging jpeg from raw is fine but not all my jpeg files have the same tags as the corresponding raw files (some by accident I must confess). If I select files for printing I use tagging (print-date tag) for this. But I don't want my raw files to be printed. And if I decide to rework the settings (does not happen that often) I want to copy the tags from the old jpeg instead the one from the raw files. The history function is not of much use for me. As long as the history only handles final pictures and not the process which leads to the new picture its usage is limited (for me). So even if the old tag belongs to a new photo (different parameter set) I can find out which photos I had printed. And with my backup I can restore the photo. ok - I've found my problem (one at least). Thanks Andrew for the
interpretation. I use Gentoo and had not enable the xmp use flag for compiling exiv2. Will enable that and recompile programs that can use it. Martin: ok - I understand that. In DK I separate out my files by file directories, so I have a date parent directory with the untouched raws, then a jpeg subdirectory for images sized for web. And I have a "working" subdirectory for tiffs or photoshop psd's. So with the way I am set up I couldn't really select all the images unless I filter somehow. Lightroom shows all images in subdirectories if you choose, so it would be very easy to do as you do. Maybe DK has that capability too to show all images in subdirectories.. but I find it confusing so see all versions of an image at once. /jd On Mon, Jan 2, 2012 at 11:59 AM, Martin (KDE) <[hidden email]> wrote: > Am Montag, 2. I used different subfolders for different types of photos once but finally decided to store them all in one folder. With this I can see if I already have one gimp file at once without the need to check another subfolder. Usually I run gimp from within digikam but not always. And all in one folder makes backup management much easier. 2012/1/2 Jim Dory <[hidden email]> Lightroom shows all images in subdirectories if you choose, You might want to use the functionalities provided by Digikam. As for myself, I have all the versions of the same picture in the same album/folder. When you want to filter certain files only, you only have to use the filtering criteria: only raw, only jpeg, only tiff, everything but raw, etc. And if you want to make a more complicated selection (using date or whatever), you can use the search menu, and all the filtering capabilities of tags, color labels and such. In addition, DK now provides a grouping functionality that allows to put all the versions of a picture in the same group; you can then either display one of each group, or all the versions ... unfortunately, there seems to be a bug that sometimes prevents DK to display a group (at the moment, I have 2 - in 30000 - I cannot see in DK); but hopefully, this issue will be solved quite soon. -- Une galerie photos, un blog ... pourquoi pas ? I agree with that. As Digikam provides plenty of tools to filter/select images with a great number of criteria, it's better to rely on its powerfulness to find 'the' image you're looking for at 't' time. I use albums/folders to roughly divide my whole collection, so I more or less know where I can find something, in order to reduce the searching scope for Digikam. For events, or trips, or whatever where I take 50 to 500 pictures, or many more, I create a specific folder; the rest goes in a monthly 'day-to-day' folder. And the whole in organized by years. I am about to complete my 10th year in numeric photography, and it has worked for me all this time (I used Photoshop Elements with Windows before switching to Linux/Digikam and have been able to keep the whole structure and the tags from the beginning). Recompiled exiv2 with xmp support (added it to my make.conf file and
did an "emerge -avuND @world" to make sure anything else using xmp would be recompiled but I think only exiv2 and tellico were done. Still grayed out in DK settings. If I look at that same Metadata settings and look at the viewers, they are all blank - no options selected- and I'm not sure how that ought to be. There's too many things in there for me to grasp, but if I enable them it doesn't appear to help in the Behavior tab with the Read xmp sidecars. I did do a restart of the computer just in case and for other reasons as well. cheers, Jim On Mon, Jan 2, 2012 at 11:44 AM, Andrew Goodbody <[hidden email]> wrote: > On 02/01/12 20:32, Jim Dory wrote: >> >> Many thanks folks - I enjoy the discussion about workflow and other >> softwares - would love to finally dump my windows XP. >> >> I will study the links provided by Gilles and see if I can make head >> or tails from them to enable xmp in DK. > > > Gilles was basically saying that the library that deals with metadata, > Exiv2, has not been compiled with support for XMP. KDE libkexiv2 interface for digiKam need to be recompiled after Exiv2 changes.
Also, look into Help/Components Info dialog for details about Exiv2 and metadata capabilities if all is fine. yes, that was that issue. Thanks.. now I will see if I can get it to
