Folder structure

Bugzilla from swoop@swoop.dk
Hey all

I'm a new user of Digikam (and DSLR for that matter too) and found it
very easy to use but sure there still much to learn :-)

I'm wondering, how do you organize your pictures on a folder level? Do
you use dates and handle everything within Digikam or do you create a
folder for every event and handle the rest inside Digikam.

Many thanks for your inputs.

It surely depends on *you* and how you want things to look. :-)

Personally I have my pictures arranged in a hierarchy of decades,
years etc.  E.g. I have:-

pictures
    1980s
        1980
            Aug - Arrive in Oman
Dec - Barbecue at Qawr Yenkit 4th Dec
Dec - Boxing Day at RaH
Dec - Christmas day at RaH
            Feb - Chester Zoo
            Feb - Pettypool Wood
            Jan - Barnet and Hertford
            June - Irish holiday
            March - Zelma's christening
Nov - National day, 18th November
Nov - Qurm Heights house on Ben's Birthday
Nov - RAH beach, parties, etc.
Oct - Desert trips, RAH, etc.
            Oct - Khawr Yenqit
Oct - Ras al Hadd "Turtle Beach"
        1981
            ...
            ...
            ...
    1990s
        1990
            ...
            ...

The only problem with this (which you can see above) is that Digikam
arranges the folders alphabetically just like the default ls sort does
(which is how I got the above list).  I have a patched version of
Digikam which arranges folders in date order (that's the Digikam date
for the folder) so if I set the date in the folder properties in
digikam I get the folders with month names in the right order.

Well, I simply make folders for every different ocasion I take pictures,
leaving the date handling to digikam and its database ;)

Since I have a large number of old photos and slides that I have scanned to create a long family history I can't use the date of the photo automatically. They are all registered as the date scanned and changing dates on over 7,000 photos is not on my agenda right now and in many cases the year is close as I can get. I use a structure that has a folder for each year and then sub-folders for major events such as Christmas, Birthdays, and Vacations.

An old mainframer getting current

Thanks a lot for warm welcome :)

Many thanks for great input how to order the folders and pictures within
Digikam itself. I'm not sure I got the perfect solution for me but you
have given me good ideas I have to try out.

This could be solved by naming in ISO format: 20080901 - Trip to Susan's.

This is the way I do it, and it works.

Yes, I know, but it's not very beautiful nor is is very non-computer
user friendly.

There's a bug raised for it - Bug 156186.

I can't really have all my albums at the same level, far too many for
convenience so my year split up makes sense.

Then one is left with either the redundant full YYYYMMDD format or MMDD
which is far from easy to 'read' quickly.  The eye and mind understand
'May' much more quickly than '05' - my mind does anyway!  :-)

I use this "convention", for my photos and for my family photo:
Shared photos
    2007
       2007-01-15 Description of this set
2007-03-07 A different description of this set
       ....
    2008
       2008-02-06 Birthday
    ....
Work and experiments
    2007
       2007-01-09 Description of this set
       2007-02-15 Description of this set
       2007-03 A lot of work
          2007-03-15 First set
          2007-03-16 Second set
    ....

I group my set of shots in monthly set only if I have a lot of shots and
have to find them in a short time.

Anyway, I always use the "yyyy-mm-dd short description" format for my
directories because I want all my date information attached to the
directory, so I can find them even if I put it in the wrong year
directory or if I copy them on a CD/DVD to give to a friend.

My parents (62 an 65 years old) and my brother use the same conventions
and we are happy with it, because we can exchange photos between each
other without messing around our personal collection. My brother uses
digikam too, but my parents use iPhoto on two old iMacs, and this way
they always know where to put their photos.

Don't think there is something to change in digikam, I love that it
leaves to us the freedom to organize our collection to our way.

regards
gerlos

When I importing from my camera choosing creat album as ISO format,
digikam create them like YYYY-MM-DD.

My folder layout looks like this.

Pictures
    Photos
        2007
            2007-01-01
            2007-01-10 - My Birthday
            ...

Which just confirms my thoughts about it, that 2007-01-10 is a huge
waste of space, I want longer descriptive titles and compact 'dates'.
The 2007 is totally redundant, we already know it's 2007.

As I said I *know* I can use the ISO or similar format but it really
doesn't fit my requirements very well.

I just hate redundancy, especially where it's wasting space that I
could better use for other information.  I have toyed with the idea of
using superscripts in front to minimise the space the numbers use, e.g.:-

    ₁₂Dec

(you probably need UTF to see that)

That's interesting, the grouping at the high-level. I've often thought about
doing that, but I guess that's where I envision tags/keywords come into
things. Of course, that means EXIF/IPTC etc., but I have yet to find anything
that seems to work without fail. I know the date-formatting cannot scale very
well with meaning, only for org.

Yes, it's true, using yyyy-mm-dd-description it's a /little/ waste of
space, but this way your directory it's "portable": just copy it on a
CD, and you don't need to change anything. And even if you delete it
accidentally, you can restore it from backup without the risk of
changing its name and loosing informations in digikam database (you
know, if digikam 0.9.* don't find a directory, it asks you to delete its
data from the database...).

Maybe I'm paranoic, but I prefer a little redundancy, to feel more
"secure"...

gerlos
