Hash: SHA1 Hi list, First of all: I don't know if this is really the right place to discuss a new feature or if it should better go to the users list, so I will listen to your advice. As it is strongly database related, too, and in my eyes a useful and singular feature that could give digicam the edge over the competitors one more time, let me just explain it in short words here. digikam already has a useful interface to gps metadata, beeing the import from gps files or the interactive inserting or editing of those coordinates. However these coordinates are of only restricted use without a map image. www.flickr.com offers to associate a place name whenever you upload a geocoded image to this service. After research on the web I found the website http://ws.geonames.org, which offers under the url http://ws.geonames.org/findNearbyPlaceName?style=full&lat=29.630771&lng=91.175537 the results of a placename search in xml, here a small village in Tibet. placename, countryCode, countryName, adminCode1 and adminName1 could be added now to the iptc data of every image file (I do this currently via a perl script). Please tell me if this idea is useful and implementable in the database, and if yes how this should be discussed with the current user base and introduced into development. Marcus.
I have tested the web site, and feature is excelent. I recommend you to make a new wish in Bugzilla, into kipi-plugin/GPSSync component. I will take a look how to implemente it when i will port this plugin to KDE4... Hi Markus,
I think this is a nice idea. Presumably the best is to file a feature wish in the bug-tracker (with the contents of your mail) and discuss things there. This ensures that no comments are forgotten ... Just two comments: - what about off-line situations? (one could use the 160 MB zip file, or individual files for each country of interest) - what if the place is at the border of a larger town (but still inside), with a small village nearby? Then the small village is the one which is used, right?
