Afaik, Digikam (and I'd assume Nautiles)uses the embedded thumbnail in album
view. Also, in single image view, there's a gray rectangle saying 'embedded
jpeg preview' when it shows a ARW file.

No idea, you shouldn't lose any image data, metadata might be more tricky.
Someone else who is better informed could perhaps answer that one.
