Duration of a full rescan of a collection?

Sveinn í Felli-2
Hi,

After some serious reorganization of my image folders, Digikam hung
during ages rescanning the whole collection. Killed the processes,
relaunched Digikam from command line and saw some messages about locked
tables [1].
The UI appears, but is terribly slow, and item-count is zero in the
changed/moved/renamed albums. Apparently NewItemFinder is doing its job.
Eight hours passed but still not much of a progress.

Tried Digikam 4.12 (KDE 4.14.2) both from LinuxMint 17.2 Cinnamon
(ppa:philip5) and Opensuse 13.2 KDE, collection is on a local 7600 RPM
HDD, OS on a SSD, and system is a respectable i7-4790K CPU @ 4x4.00GHz
with 32Gb RAM.

So, what amount of time is necessary to rescan a collection with ~80k
items totalling ~180Gb ? Does anyone have an experience ?

Thanks,

Sveinn í Felli

I can't tell you the exact time, but I'll never ever do a rescan (if I
don't really must - touch on wood) because it takes ages.

I know, I have some inconsistency in my database after so much moving,
deleting, changing all the time, images not showing up and the like, but
I prefer to live with it, because a rescan will block my PC for several
days...

I cannot explain why it is so slow. Normal resizing, adding to database
and writing thumbs to disk cannot explain it to me. Maybe it's because
thumbs are db-entries instead of normal files only indexed in a db? No
idea.

In fact, having to rebuild all of a large collection, is the worst thing
that can happen with this, apart from that, fantastic software.

Take some more free time and wait for your computer to finish, some day
he will :-) Cheer up!
