i'm used to dragging images from digikam album view to thunderbird or to
web uploads and it never disturbs the original contents of the album. when i wanted to copy some images to a thumbdrive to show someone, i dragged the images there, and after half a dozen images, i noticed they were being deleted from the album. i restored them, but had i not noticed, this could have been unfortunate. i was surprised (to say the least) that the drag and drop action from digikam album to nautilus was a move rather than a copy. i tend to expect a drag and drop to any removable media to be interpreted as a copy. i do notice when dragging images from one album to another in digikam, the app gives you the option to "move" or "copy" which is great. also, when dragging from nautilus to digikam you get that choice. is there a way to configure that dragging images from albumview to nautilus (or some other app) doesn't ever delete the original? digikam: Version 1.0.0-beta5 Using KDE 4.2.4 (KDE 4.2.4) nautilus: 2.26.2 ubuntu 9.04 kernel: 2.6.28-18-generic thanks much! -rei _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users |
Do not use an old beta5. use last digikam stable 1.2.0

Same here. Nautilus is not KDE material and doesn't present a context menu for "move" or "copy". I guess the default behavior for nautilus is to move, then.

Thanks Gilles, rebuilding from source tarball now. I'll report if the
behavior I reported improves. thanks, -rei On 04/23/2010 09:31 AM, Gilles Caulier wrote: > Do not use an old beta5. use last digikam stable 1.2.0 > > Gilles Caulier > > 2010/4/23 Rei Shinozuka<[hidden email]>: > >> i'm used to dragging images from digikam album view to thunderbird or to >> web uploads and it never disturbs the original contents of the album. >> >> when i wanted to copy some images to a thumbdrive to show someone, i >> dragged the images there, and after half a dozen images, i noticed they >> were being deleted from the album. i restored them, but had i not >> noticed, this could have been unfortunate. i was surprised (to say the >> least) that the drag and drop action from digikam album to nautilus was >> a move rather than a copy. i tend to expect a drag and drop to any >> removable media to be interpreted as a copy. >> >> i do notice when dragging images from one album to another in digikam, >> the app gives you the option to "move" or "copy" which is great. also, >> when dragging from nautilus to digikam you get that choice. >> >> is there a way to configure that dragging images from albumview to >> nautilus (or some other app) doesn't ever delete the original? >> >> digikam: Version 1.0.0-beta5 Using KDE 4.2.4 (KDE 4.2.4) >> nautilus: 2.26.2 >> ubuntu 9.04 >> kernel: 2.6.28-18-generic >> >> thanks much! >> >> -rei >> >> _______________________________________________ >> Digikam-users mailing list >> [hidden email] >> https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users >> >> > _______________________________________________ > Digikam-users mailing list > [hidden email] > https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users > _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users |

OK, have 1.2.0 installed now, thanks for the heads up.
The behavior is the same--dragging image from album to nautilus will remove the original. I can appreciate KDE/Gnome incompatibilities as being potentially responsible for this behavior, but don't you agree that it would be better if in a mixed environment the behavior on both sides should be the consevative action? In this case, if it's not clear if the action is a "move" or "copy" then do the copy, and not do the deletion? I'm a programmer from way back, but I won't try to pretend I understand the protocol between apps when drag and drops happen. I think it would be nice, however, if a program could be "defensive" and have the final say over whether it's supposed to delete content, regardless of what another app is asking it to do. Practicality, I think, should tell us that what I did (drag an object from digikam album to nautilus) is probably pretty commonplace. Most users don't really know or care about KDE/Gnome environments. Furthermore, I think people who are going to drag from digikam to a USB drive are not going to expect the original to be deleted. In fact, I have a bit of the heebie-jeebies thinking about possible images I might have dragged and accidentally deleted in the past. Do you guys define this as a bug? If so, I'll be happy to fill in a bug report or whatever. -rei On 04/23/2010 09:44 AM, Aditya Bhatt wrote: > Same here. > Nautilus is not KDE material and doesn't present a context menu for > "move" or "copy". Digikam just packages the dragged URLs, the recipient decides what to do with them. Dolphin e.g. copies them by default. _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users |
