Digikam support Nikon D3100

John Bestevaar
Dear Sirs
I believe in open source and i believe in embedded metada inside images
as the best way to associate symbolic character based information with
an image.
I am working on a open source free website  project where i hope to make
extensive use of XMP/XML as containers for a lot of detailed information
about the content/subject of each image.(50,000 images)
Therefore as an ordinary user ( i am not a developer or programmer) i am
prepared to contribute money to your efforts.
Specifically: How much money would it take to enable my Digikam
application to support my Nikon D3100 camera on my system?

My system: Ubuntu 10.04,1 LTS, Gnome 2.30.2, Nautilus 2.30.1, Digikam
1.2.0-0ubuntu, Kipi-plugins 1.2.0-0ubuntu
More information available if you wish.
Kind Regards John Bestevaar

John,

Thanks to support digiKam project.

I'm glad to said that D3100 is already supported by digiKam, as Nikon
RAW files :

http://www.flickr.com/photos/digikam/5400617648/

... through libraw library : http://www.libraw.org

Also, Nikon metadata are supported very well by Exiv2 library, used in
background by digiKam :

http://www.exiv2.org

So, there is nothing to do i think, excepted if you has discovered a
dysfunction somewhere...

Re: Digikam support Nikon D3100

John Bestevaar
Dear Giles
Thank you for your quick and clear reply.
I will make more money donations in near future.
The reason for my question is:
Launch Digikam > plug in USB cable > Turn on Nikon D3100 camera.
Digikam tab: Import > cameras > Nikon DSC D3100 ( auto detected )
When i click on the last item there is an Error message.

"Failed to connect to the camera. Please make sure it is connected properly and turned on. Would you like to try again?"

I assumed this means that my camera is not supported.

I do have Digikam access to my Nikon D3100 NEF photos by first downloading to my computer HDD via Nautilus.
I have not reported this via your Bug reporting system because even after reading your Digikam handbook i am not sure that i have not made a mistake somewhere.

The flickr link shows Digikam version 2.0.0- beta2 Rev.: 1217876m
As supporting Nikon D3100 in the supported cameras list.
I assume that as this version is not packaged in the Ubuntu repository ,it is too unstable for Gnome Desktop.
Kind Regards John Bestevaar

Nikon camera listed in digiKam import come from Gphoto2 library device
autodetection.

The error message come from Gphoto2

I'm sure that Nikon can be use in USB Mass  Storage mode. In this case
the camera will be detected as an USB key :

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond3100/page2.asp

Connectivity • USB 2.0 (Hi-Speed)
• Mass storage / PTP selectable      <-----------------------------
• A/V out
• HDMI out
• DC-IN (optional AC adapter and adapter connector)

To switch to UMS mode will be better in digiKam...

Dear Giles
I have carefully checked my Nikon D3100 camera Menu > Setup.
I find no Mass storage/PTP selectable function or item.
I have also checked my Nikon D3100 Reference Manual.
I find no reference to  Mass storage/PTP selectable function or item.
I have searched with Google.
Many sites mention your reference:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond3100/page2.asp
But none actually show or explain the procedure.
I have been to Source forge and tried to down load  Digikam version 2.0.0- beta2
Rev.: 1217876m
Unfortunately every attempt had a down load error.

Possible Solutions:
Where do i find and how do i install a Digikam/ Kipi version that supports Nikon
D3100

No. the right question is about which library by digiKam play with
your Nikon in PTP mode : libgphoto2 (http://www.gphoto.org)

Hi there,

Most of the recent Nikon reflex models lack the USB menu in the set-up,
because they work only in PTP mode. I got surprised when I got my D90
camera and it was not recognized by my system as a mass storage media.
Despite, its very likely for you to work around and get the PTP mode up
and running, I should say it's much easier, and recomended by most of
serious photographers I know to use a card reader. It uses no battery
and lowers the usage of the camera, giving to it a bit more of life.

Hope I've been helpful,

Mikel

OK Thanks Giles.
The problem with asking the right question is that you don't know the
right question to ask until you know the right question to ask.
My Nikon D3100 camera is not on the list of cameras supported by
libgphoto2 at www.gphoto.org

Hi Mikel
Fantastic !! it worked !! Thank you very much.
DigiKam Libgphoto2 does not support my Nikon D3100 camera.

Solution: Desktop computer Ubuntu 10.04.1
Launch your Digikam application
Remove storage card from your camera.
Connect your USB card Reader device to computer.
Insert Storage card in USB card reader.
Digikam: click on menu item " Import "
Click on submenu item"USB storage device"
Click on sub sub menu item" USB disk "flash reader""
This opens another window where Digikam will scan the card and display
the resulting image thumbnails.

This procedure may be obvious to you and other skilled people but for
someone like me who got his first computer a few years ago at age 60
without even typing skills , it is different.
Perhaps this solution might be good in the FAQ list at the Digikam website.

Re: Digikam support Nikon D3100

J Albrecht
John,

When you connect your camera to your box via the USB cable, give at a minute and open Nautilus. "Unmount" the camera. Then, you'll be able to access it as you wish in dK.

Hi Hevii
Even more fantastic! Simpler and it works!
Your solution saves the risk of damage to the card from multiple removals and reinsertions in the camera and external USB card reader.
I must admit however that "Unmounting" a device in order to get it to work with an application is counterintuitive when normal working calls for first " Mounting" the device.
I suggest that this solution / tip does merit a mention on the Digikam website, perhaps in FAQ.
BTW i have made another money donation.

John,

When you connect your camera to your box via the USB cable, give at a minute and open Nautilus. "Unmount" the camera. Then, you'll be able to access it as you wish in dK.

Woo hoo! A Linux neophyte such as me is able to help solve a dK problem. Great for my ego!

Yeah, this is a bit bizarre, isn't it. Is it a bug?

Re: Digikam support Nikon D3100

Between us newbies , no idea if its a DK bug or not.
If i were to guess i would say that the "Unmount " command ( mouse click )  closes the camera PTP interface and unmasks the camera interface for the USB mass storage format of the card. Reminds me of the image transfer selection option  between PTP and USB mass storage on some cameras "Setup"menu. My Nikon D3100 does not have this option as the user is supposed to use the Nikon transfer software that comes on a CD with the camera but is usable only for Windows and Apple computers.

This is a possible cause, I suppose.

But I think that the cause could be different: maybe Gnome/Nautlus auto mounting somehow blocks the KDE/Digikam tools for accessing hardware devices (Solid), and when you unmount the device you remove this block.
I'm running KDE Plasma Desktop and never experienced this strange behavior.
Maybe with a little of investigation, we could understand the problem and update the documentation as needed.

Anyway, it's the result that matter! :-)

good luck
gerlos

Re: Digikam support Nikon D3100

Robert Zeller
Gerlos et al.:

I am having the same problem with my Nikon D200 in ptp mode (camera is
correctly recognized by DK; but no access to the images on the camera);
I completely agree with you that this is not a DK problem but related to
some strange mounting of the ptp-camera by some other application; here
are my findings:

I am running two almost identical systems with the following configurations:
1. PC : 64 bit system: SuSE 11.3, DK 1.8 ; kde 4.4.4
2. Laptop : 32 bit system SuSE 11.3, DK 1.8  both systems have the same
software level

On system 2 (Laptop) Camera is mounted in ptp mode by DK without
problems and images can be loaded by DK; on system 1 (PC) images can not
be loaded.
And now the very strange behaviour: Only for one user - unfortunately my
own id - the PC is not able to load the images via DK; on all other
accounts images would be loaded by DK.

This is obviously related to some other application - I don't know which
one - mounting the camera before DK is able to grab it. Looking further
into this problem I found that, as soon as I plug in the camera, an
automatic  mount is performed in $HOME/.gvfs/'ghoto2 mount on
usb%3A001,006' ; and it is possible to find  all the files on the camera
memory card under this mount point.

The mount command delivers the following information:

gvfs-fuse-daemon on /home/robert/.gvfs type fuse.gvfs-fuse-daemon
(rw,nosuid,nodev,user=robert)

Since all other users don't see this strange behavior the only
explanation would be that one of the applications that are started on
login to my own account performs the mount of the gvfs-fuse-daemon;
though this mount command is nowhere in /etc/fstab. Umounting the
gvfs-fuse-daemon by hand and then starting DK doesn't solve the problem.

I have no idea which application forces the unwanted mount of the
gvfs-fuse-daemon and what I can do, to force DK to mount the camera
before any other applcation.

Anybody any ideas ???

Robert
