I suggest implement the easy solution first i.e. Give a warning when user is going to overwrite the original file. Define 'original file' as the when the digikam session is opened. Other more elaborate solutions can come later if needed.
I don't agree with keeping an always untouched 'original' and doing all changes on copies; this could use a lot of up disk space which would make digikam a poor choice for small systems. Any user who wants to keep an untouched original should do so by making a backup copy, not by relying on an application to maintain one.
