Hi
I recently tried to tag a collection of images (trip to London) and found it rather bumpy. Here's what I did: 1. In the thumbnail view I marked huge chunks of images and set general Tags that applied to all of them (i.e. vacation and London). It is OK and fast that way 2. I went to view mode and went through the images. For every image I did: 2.1 Start typing in the search field (or if I knew it was a new tag set it immediately) 2.2 When the tag was found select it with the mouse 2.3 Delete the text in the search field 2.4 Do 2.1 again for the next tag until all tags were set then go to the next image So setting the more specific tags (like "London Bridge", "Tower of London", "Friend 1", "Friend 2") was rather bumpy. Taking my hands away from the keyboard to use the mouse was also not speeding up the tagging. What I would have expected would be something like this: 1. Got to view mode and select the tagging sidebar on the right 2. When I want to tag an image simply start typing. The top X tags that match what I typed are shown (similar the way a browser shows the URLs from my history that match what I typed). 3. If the tag I wanted is in the list simply use the cursor keys to select it and press 3.1 enter to select a tag and delete the search 3.2 ie. shift+enter to select a tag and keep the search 4 Repeat until all the tags are set then go to the next image (I've changed the shortcut already to the page down key. Space dosn't realy work that well.) The other thing is I can't see which tags were already set in an easy way. So I don't know if I set all the tags I wanted to set. I'm using digikam 1.0.0 on Ubuntu Karmic. If something like this is already planned or there is a better way to tag images let me know. I use a somewhat different method of tagging. If I need to I just create the tags in advance in the right hand tag window. Then I just select the images I want to tag and drag them to the approriate tag or I select the images I want to tag and right click and go to "assign tag". From the right click menu there is an option to create a tag on the fly which is pretty sweet. Remember that you can make the thumbnails as large or as small as you want so I don't use the view. It is true that you'll have to do a bit of hand switching, from mouse to keyboard and back, with this method but it doesn't seem to be that big of a problem for me. You may have different feelings.
I've been tagging for a fairly long time so I don't have to create all that many tags now. I also use a lot of hierarchical tags. So I have a tag for people and under it I have a tag for Friend one, friend 2 etc. Similarly I have a tag for places and then all of the places are beneath it. It's not necessary to worry a lot about what tags you need and in what hierarchy you want them as you can drag and drop them to new places any time you want. Similarly you can rename them any time you want. So just go ahead and tag them and worry about getting it right later. So if I were ever lucky enough to go to London I'd have PLACES/ENGLAND/LONDON/ SOME REALLY COOL PLACE 1 then SOME REALLY KOOL PLACE 2 and so on. Notice that in the left tags find window I can click on any of the tags to get all of images tagged with tags below it or you could geocode the images and then just select a rectangle on the map to find all of the images within the rectangle. I use a GPS to geocode the images as that way is very fast and very reliable. This is basically the method I use for a bunch of images (my step 1), for instance PLACES/ENGLAND/LONDON/LONDON BRIDGE, because I shoot them in a row. The problem I see with this method is that I could easily forget to assign a tag. So in my opinion it would be great assign the tags in the way I described as a second option. There's still the problem that there is now easy way to view the tags that I assigned to an image. I've activated the "Show digikam tags" in the Album View options. But if there are a lot of tags digikam doesn't show them all. To see the tags I've assigned to pictures I open the caption/tags panel on the right and at the bottom of the panel is a check box that if clicked will show the tags already assigned to the image. From there you can right click any image and add all the tags you want and watch them pile up.
As for your second option there may be a way to do what you want, digikam is a beast and has lots of fundtionality that I'm not aware of. This way it is a very slow process. I know the "Tags already assigned" button but my problem is that like you I use a tree/hierarchy and it is closed by default.
