Digikam 7.1 on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS - Cannot read meta data from HEIC files

evas
Hi all,

in the process of switching to digikam 7.1 from Photos.app on a Mac.  I've set up a Virtual machine running ubuntu desktop 20.04 LTS.  When it set it up, I told Ubuntu's installer to install without installing a ton of extra third party, non-open source software.

Now, when I load the Digikam software, I notice the logs filling with the following style of error:

Digikam::MetaEngine::Private::printExiv2ExceptionError: Cannot load metadata from file /mnt/photo_library/2008/03/05/2008-53-05T21-53-30_photo_200.heic  (Error # 11 :  /mnt/photo_library/2008/03/05/2008-53-05T21-53-30_photo_200.heic: The file contains data of an unknown image type

Is there an HEIF library that I need to load in to Ubuntu?  Did I miss something by choosing to installed the stripped down version of the Ubuntu desktop?

I've been searching for a while now and cannot find an answer.  Any help is appreciated!

Best Regards,
Eric

Hi, I see the same issue under Ubuntu, running 7.1.0 in an appimage.  When I look at the properties on the photos within digiKam, it does seem to see the meta data, so I'm not sure what is missing.

I will try the latest version's release candidate (7.2.0-rc) and re-import to see if that fixes it, although I'd be happier with the stable version.

I originally installed Ubuntu's packaged version (6.4.0) but it kept crashing on me with trap int3 in libglib-2.0.so.0.6600.1.
