DigiKam losing it's own information ???

BuckSkin
This post was updated on .
64-bit Windows 7 ... digiKam version 5.5.0

I have a major problem with digiKam losing association with tags and geolocation information that have been applied to images IN digiKam.

The tags and geolocation information is still showing in file properties, exif, and so forth, and is still recognized in various other image programs; however digiKam itself is not recognizing it's own work.

I view an "album/collection" in digiKam that I know for fact has geolocation and category tags applied to all images and a third or more of them will not show this information, yet the same images exhibit the information in all my other programs.

On EDIT:  I just looked in "metadata" in digiKam and all the information that digiKam is not recognizing is right there, all the tags, GPS info, everything, yet it is absent from the thumbnail view.

Thus, when I do a category/tag search in digiKam, it does not bring up these images, which defeats my soul purpose for doing all that tagging in digiKam in the first place.

Is this something I am doing wrong, or is it a bug in digiKam ?

2nd Edit: More information : I selected a group of thumbnails that, although they had geolocation information, were not displaying the "has geolocation information" icon, and chose "Item > edit geolocation information"
When these images opened in the geolocation editor, they were displaying the correct information that I had already applied; I clicked "Apply" anyway before closing; once back in thumbnail view, there was still no geolocation icon associated with these images, although the information is right there, branded into the metadata.

Thanks for reading.

Hi,

You can reread metadata from your images, either press F5 or rightclick the
album in the album list and choose "refresh".

Kindly,
Anders

Thanks so much !  Alas, when I right-click an album, I do not get a "refresh" choice; all I get is "New" and "open in file manager"
Going to "Album > ReRead metadata from images" seems to do nothing.
Going to "View > Refresh" (F5) starts some kind of lengthy process, yet the information is still missing.

I can't think of what you might be doing wrong, but I also can't
reproduce the issue. In my case tagging and geolocation works fine, i.e.
the information is persistent. Can you provide one image that works and
another that doesn't for testing?

Reread metadata and write metadata to the images or the maintenance tool
metadata synchronizer does not work in digiKam-5.5.0. The bug is already been
fixed for digiKam-5.6.0.

Hello, Make sure the box "Write metadata to files" is checked in the settings as well as you have the proper (read/write, not just read) rights set up for the collection folder in the file system.

Thanks, everyone, for your patience and help; I sort of got sidetracked for a few days and was delayed in posting back.

I made an attempt to download version 5.6.0 and after a couple hours I finally gave up and cancelled; I will try again in the wee hours of morning; downloads seem to work better for me then.

I have another issue that I have noticed, digiKam is not acknowledging about a third of the images in some of the folders; the images are right there in the folders; the folders/albums are right there in digiKam; all of the tags and geolocation information that was added right in digiKam is written into the metadata, yet try as I may, I cannot get digiKam to show about a third of the images in any given folder/album.

Thanks for reading.

This is  probably the good ol' "always show originals" checkbox.

It is in settings / versioning if I remember that correct and it is unchecked by default.

The "always show originals" box is not checked, nor is the other choice beneath it; I am assuming that it should remain unchecked.

Or rather, you should know what it does, so you can decide whether it should
be checked or not...

Digikam has the possibility to show only the edited versions (if present) and
hide the original files (if digikam 'knows' which is the edited version). This
helps reducing clutter in the interface. If there's no edited version, the raw
file will of course be shown.

Checking the mentioned boxes forces Digikam to show the originals even in the
presence of an edited version. These options only change what you see, they
don't change what's actually saved/stored on your HDD or in the database. So
playing with them can't do any harm.

Re: DigiKam losing it's own information ???

Problem FIXED ! ! !   Thanks Everyone !
I finally managed to get Version 5.6.0 downloaded and installed; "Re-Read Metadata from Images" now works, both for single images via Item > Re-read..., and for entire folders via Album > Re-read....

With a single click, all of my missing tags and GPS info magically reappeared.

As for the download process:  It is not obvious, nor is it very well explained, as to how to go about downloading only the file one wants.
At first, and all previous downloads of digiKam, I clicked the downward-pointing triangle thingie and got a menu that had, among other choices, "download"; this option yields a huge zip-file that includes all available installers for various platforms; however, if one selects only the download desired from the big thumbnails, right-clicks the thumbnail and chooses "download" from the menu, then you only get the desired installer and the delivery is quite a bit smaller.

Thanks for reading.
