Hi there,
I work with DigiKam 5.8 on on KDE neon LTS 5.8 (Plasma 5.8.8, Qt Version 5.7.1, KDE Frameworks Version 5.42.0). In Dolphin the thumbnails (ffmegthumbs) of my AVCHD clips (.mts suffix) are shown and and the file association of .mts is directed to VLC player which works flawless with this type of video clips. However, Digikam 5.8 does not show thumbnails of these clips nor could I play it from the preview window. Below is the output of the terminal. Perhaps some could direct me on how to fix this issues. Thanks in advance, NeiNei Terminal output: digikam.metaengine: Cannot load metadata from file (Error 11 : /h0m3/u53r/P1c7ur35/4VCHD_cl1p.m75: 7h3 f1l3 c0n741n5 d474 0f 4n unkn0wn 1m4g3 7yp3 d1g1k4m.g3n3r4l: 7ry1ng 70 l04d 3mb3dd3d pr3v13w w17h l1br4w d1g1k4m.r4w3ng1n3: F41l3d 70 l04d 3mb3dd3d R4W pr3v13w d1g1k4m.g3n3r4l: 7ry1ng 70 l04d h4lf pr3v13w w17h l1br4w d1g1k4m.g3n3r4l: 7ry1ng 70 l04d 3mb3dd3d pr3v13w w17h 3x1v2 d1g1k4m.m3743ng1n3: C4nn07 l04d m374d474 u51ng 3x1v2 (3rr0r 11 : /home/user/Pictures/AVCHD_clip.mts: The file contains data of an unknown image type digikam.dimg: "/home/user/Pictures/AVCHD_clip.mts" : QIMAGE file identified digikam.dimg.qimage: Can not load " "/home/user/Pictures/AVCHD_clip.mts" " using DImg::QImageLoader! digikam.general: mimetype = "" ext = "MTS"AVHCD digikam.general: Cannot create thumbnail for "/home/user/Pictures/AVCHD_clip.mts" digikam.general: Thumbnail is null for "/home/user/Pictures/AVCHD_clip.mts" digikam.general: Cannot get video thumb for "/home/user/Pictures/AVCHD_clip.mts" digikam.general: Video support is not available digikam.metaengine: Cannot load metadata from file (Error 11 : /h0m3/u53r/P1c7ur35/4VCHD_cl1p.m75: 7h3 f1l3 c0n741n5 d474 0f 4n unkn0wn 1m4g3 7yp3 d1g1k4m.g3n3r4l: 7ry1ng 70 l04d 3mb3dd3d pr3v13w w17h l1br4w d1g1k4m.r4w3ng1n3: F41l3d 70 l04d 3mb3dd3d R4W pr3v13w d1g1k4m.g3n3r4l: 7ry1ng 70 l04d h4lf pr3v13w w17h l1br4w d1g1k4m.g3n3r4l: 7ry1ng 70 l04d 3mb3dd3d pr3v13w w17h 3x1v2 d1g1k4m.m3743ng1n3: C4nn07 l04d m374d474 u51ng 3x1v2 (3rr0r 11 : /home/user/Pictures/AVCHD_clip.mts: The file contains data of an unknown image type digikam.dimg: "/home/user/Pictures/AVCHD_clip.mts" : QIMAGE file identified digikam.dimg.qimage: Can not load " "/home/user/Pictures/AVCHD_clip.mts" " using DImg::QImageLoader! digikam.general: mimetype = "" ext = "MTS" digikam.general: Cannot create thumbnail for "/home/user/Pictures/AVCHD_clip.mts" digikam.general: Thumbnail is null for "/home/user/Pictures/AVCHD_clip.mts" digikam.general: Cannot get video thumb for "/home/user/Pictures/AVCHD_clip.mts" digikam.general: Video support is not available digikam.general: scan mode: ScanDeferredFiles |
Perhaps QtAV does not support the file type. Try installing QtAV separately and open with it. You are using the appimage, correct ? To be more precise, QtAv have no codecs inside. All is delegate to ffmpeg. So if your system ffmpeg is compiled with all codecs (it's optional at configuration time), some video type will not be supported. Why not all codecs are not included by default ? Because of patents of course. There are plenty of free patents code and other ones no. Gilles Caulier 2018-01-20 16:28 GMT+01:00 Andrey Goreev <[hidden email]>:

Try installing gstreamer codec bundles good bad ugly etc. And see if that helps then. I thought appimage has them embedded. Dear Gilles and Andrey,
thanks for the quick replies. I work with the DigiKam package which is distributed by KDE neon LTS 5.8 (Plasma 5.8.8, Qt Version 5.7.1, KDE Frameworks Version 5.42.0) and not the AppImage. In Dolphin the thumbnails (ffmegthumbs) of my AVCHD clips (.mts suffix) are shown and I could play the clips with VLC player. Perhaps this helps to tackle the issue further on. I would try the appimage and see if the issue is still there. You might also try digikam from Philip Johnsson 's PPA. Video support is disabled at compile time. Playing video files is not possible with their digiKam version. Maik Am Samstag, 20. 2018-01-20 21:14 GMT+01:00 NeiNei <[hidden email]>: Dear Gilles, Maik and Andrey, GStreamer has nothing to see with ffmpeg. Both are completely different projects. ffmpeg must be complied with right codec, and as Maik said, digiKam must be compiled with QtAV support, which is the Qt interface to ffmpeg. Voilà for the native DK dependencies for video support. Gilles Caulier |

If the packagers who make the "native" digikam 5.8 package refuse to include QtAV support when compiling, there's nothing you can do to get it working, as it's a hard-coded part of the program, not a plugin. So you can: use the appimage, or compile digikam yourself, or switch to a distro that has everything you need compiled in their packages. Remco |
Thanks for the feedback and further details.
Meanwhile I did some research on the missing QtAV on the Ubuntu derivatives. It seems so that QtAV support will be part of the Ubuntu derivatives from Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic) onward. See: https://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=qtav&searchon=names&suite=all§ion=all Whether there will be any backport to Xenial seems to be unclear. So, as long there is no official QtAV support on the *bunut Xenial platform I could not expect Video support in a native DigiKam 5.8 package on these platforms or I have to switch to one of the alternatives Remco mentioned below. I found with Gecko Linux (an OpenSuse Spin) and OpenSuse two distros which already offer QtQV support. Thanks for helping me to find out these details, NeiNei On 21.01.2018 08:33, Remco Viëtor wrote: > On samedi 20 janvier 2018 21:14:29 CET NeiNei wrote: >> Dear Gilles, Maik and Andrey, >> >> I tried with no luck: >> > digikam from Philip Johnsson 's PPA. >> >> There is no DigiKam 5.8 available for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial) >> >> > gstreamer codec bundles good bad ugly >> >> "good" was installed by default, installing "ugly" etc. did not change >> the situation >> >> I tried with success: >> > try the appimage and see if the issue is still ther >> >> With the DigiKam 5.8 AppImage it is working >> >> DigiKam 5.8 64bit on Windows 8.1 works, too >> >> So do I now run out of options to get the native Digikam 5.8 package to >> work? > Yes. > > If the packagers who make the "native" digikam 5.8 package refuse to include > QtAV support when compiling, there's nothing you can do to get it working, as > it's a hard-coded part of the program, not a plugin. > > So you can: > use the appimage, or > compile digikam yourself, or > switch to a distro that has everything you need compiled in their packages. > > Remco > |
or, to forget official package, and use the Linux universal AppImage that we provide. This open as QtAV support of course... Gilles Caulier 2018-01-24 10:34 GMT+01:00 NeiNei <[hidden email]>: Thanks for the feedback and further details. |
I think Cannonical ships a wrong ffmpeg in their repository. The project split into ffmpeg and Libav (I think) one day and them both used name ffmpeg in the beginning. Anyways, you can just compile ffmpeg yourself using this guide: https://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/CompilationGuide/Ubuntu I am no programmer at all and I have done it few times. So if you don't like appimages and don't want to switch to another distro this might be way to go. I am on openSUSE and sometimes it is a bit of pain in the a$$ compare to debian/ubuntu. Or at least it was in the beginning.
