Hello, I have a quick question concerning the DLNAExport Kipi plugin in digiKam 3.0.0. The plugin allows you to choose between two implementations: HPnP API and miniDLNA. What are advantages and disadvantages of each method? Thank you! This is a good question to Smit Metha <smit.meh@gmail.com>.I'm not sure if he is registered in this mailing list (he is in [hidden email] and [hidden email]). He has implemented this tool for GoSC 2012 and this year he will mentor new students... Gilles Caulier 2013/2/19 Dmitri Popov <[hidden email]>

Dmitri, can you please share the information you get from Smit with
the mailing list afterwards? Would be indeed nice to know, what the difference between the options is... Thank you! I second that! Thanks for looking into it; I have been trying the same another way around, and just commented in another thread about it.
There used to be ways to expose the tag-tree to the filesystem. Is there still such an option? I was looking to use FUSE, and came across DigikamFS. There are some postings on this very list, sep 2009 [1], but the links to the software/scripts are dead.
Any idea?
Best regards,
Boudewijn

Here is Smit's answer.
Pros of minidlna : - Has thumbnail support. As in, when you share your pics using this tool, and you try to look at them from a TV or phone, thumbnails get generated properly. - Works on all devices. Cons : - User has to install the binary and point the path in the app (Like in Panorama tool) - Doesnt support hierarchies. It will extract pics from the children and just put it flat. - Doesnt support virtual albums. ("Tags" and "Searches") - Uses UPnP 1.0.0 which might get deprecated in a couple of years (Technical) Pros of hupnp : - No need to install any binary. - Supports hierarchies and virtual albums. - Uses latest UPnP protocols. Cons: - Doesnt work on sony devices. An entire month was spent on this, still couldnt figure it out :-/. Then the library writer got busy eventually and stopped responding. - Very bad thumbnail support. ________________________________ From: Den <[hidden email]> To: digiKam - Home Manage your photographs as a professional with the power of open source <[hidden email]> Sent: Wednesday, February 20, 2013 9:55 PM Subject: Re: [Digikam-users] DLNA export question Dmitri, can you please share the information you get from Smit with the mailing list afterwards? Thanks! Somewhat off-topic:

The minidlna-configuration might give a hint. It actually is a configuration item of which I wondered what the meaning was: #------------------------------------------------------# # set this to strictly adhere to DLNA standards. # * This will allow server-side downscaling of very large JPEG images, # which may hurt JPEG serving performance on (at least) Sony DLNA products. #------------------------------------------------------# strict_dlna=no I have not been able to find out what the difference is between strict and relaxed in this regard.
