Change email handler for sending pictures

BGP
I just upgraded to Thunderbird 3 (Shredder).

Now I can't send pictures via email out of Digikam anymore.   Digikam
fails to start my email program (Thunderbird).  There are various email
program choices with Thunderbird being one of them....but not
Thunderbird 3.0.

I changed my email preferences in System-Preferences-Preferred
Applications to Custom with the correct command line for TB3 but that
has no effect on Digikam.

I'm pulling my hair out!

Which OS ?

Tbird 3 is full of bugs on OpenSuse 11.2, but works like a
charm on LinuxMint.

Does clicking on links in emails open your web-browser ?

TB3 on openSUSE 11.2 ...e-mailing pictures from digiKam 1.0 works OK.

Note: There was one issue with TB that it didn't open links from e-mails
...I had to fix that manually in TB config ...not sure if that had any
impact on digiKam integration though.

Then you have got a bugged TB3, there is a lot of weird
configuration problems due to this (locales, time formats
and such got messed). I had figured out that it was mostly
associated with KDE4, TB reads Gnome system config much better.

First make sure you have a default web-browser.

Since you're using a KDE-app under GNOME, you may want to
install a package called 'kde-systemsettings' (or something
similar, it used to be 'kcontrol'). Then you can (with a
GUI) set the default browser, default email program,
localisation and other stuff for your KDE-apps. After
configuration you can remove this package. And of course
this is just a GUI for settings you should be able to do on
a command line.

You can fix the click-bug by editing 'about.config' in TB3
or the prefs.js file. See;
<http://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_messaging/topics/firefox_does_not_launch_when_a_http_link_is_clicked_in_thunderbird>
"The keys to set to true are
'network.protocol-handler.warn-external.http' and
'network.protocol-handler.warn-external.https'"

Some have resolved many of these bugs by upgrading their KDE
to the latest stable - I suspect there will be a bugfix for
TB3 very soon.

Hope this helps (even if its a bit OT)...

The sad thing is that there's a long post on the Ubuntu forums on how to
install TB3.....in which the posters babel something about tar and all
sorts of other nonsense which never tells me how to install anything on
my machine.  I hate Windows....but Linux is doing a good job, all by
itself, of convincing me it's a pain in the neck.

Re: Change email handler for sending pictures

DIL23-2
unless you want the latest version - it's far easier just to install from the
repositories that are already set up in Ubuntu - and those versions should be
stable :) - the latest version(s) may be fab with lots of bells and whistles
but probably some bugs that may happen/appear in whatever distribution or in
general.

if you really really want the latest & greatest - for Tar, Tar-ball etc just
think zip/rar (as in Windoze) that's all it is! There are many archive apps -
I think Ubuntu uses Ark??? The tarball will always have a READ ME or
INSTALL.txt to tell you how to install the app.

DIL23
:)

P.S altho Linux seems very difficult at first you soon get used to it! and
it'll send shivers down your spine even thinking about going back to Windoze
in no time ;-)

Then you should stick to using the package manager. That's
how it's supposed to work anyway in the 'user friendly' distros.

And the click-on-email thing is also a Windows bug...

Re: Change email handler for sending pictures

I tried that 3 days ago.  No success.

The mozilla link fix and bug report is typical confusion.

I'll just wait till some other poor soul solves the problem.

Thank you for trying.

Hi,

afaik Thunderbird's binary is named "thunderbird-3.0". If you create a
symbolic link to "/usr/bin/thunderbird" (e.g. sudo ln -s
/usr/bin/thunderbird-3.0 /usr/bin/thunderbird) it should work.

At least it worked for me.

Regards,
Sven
