Canon EOS 6D

Darryl Penny
Hi Bob and Giles,

My first ever post here and I hope I've done it right!

Not too long ago I also could not connect Digikam to my Canon EOS 7D. I
don't have my camera on me right now to check again, but will do so this
evening SA time.

Admittedly my camera is a 7D and not a 6D, but the end result is Bob and
I cannot download via Digikam.

Darryl Penny

Just to check that we have the same problem, what environment are you
using?  I am using the latest  Kubuntu but have had the same problem
with Linux Mint 15

My last failed attempt was with Xubuntu 13.10. Sorry, but no error
log/screenshot for the following reason:

I very recently installed Linux Mint 16 (based on 13.10) and Digikam
with the intention of moving from Lightroom to Digikam. I love the idea
of FOSS and get a kick out of accomplishing the same or similar tasks
with non-proprietary software. I am an amateur photographer and therefor
do not have the same concerns as the professionals in the industry. But
I digress ...

I have yet to plug my 7D into Mint 16 with the latest Digikam from the
official repositories.

I own a Canon EOS 7D. I added the camera manually, and have no problems
downloading images.

Unfortunately that isn't the case with my EOS 6D :-(

I plugged my 7D into Mint 16 KDE with ALL latest software updates.

Digikam shows my 7D but no photos to import. It gives plenty camera
detail in Device Summary. It was found on Port: usb003,003, but the
camera is not shown in Dolphin.

Gwenview does not see it at all and suppies this error:
"URL cannot be listed camera:/"

Looks like I'll be using Lightroom for awhile longer ...

Darryl

What happens if you connect your camera and then go to Import>Cameras in
the menu?  Does your camera show there and if so can you find your
images by clicking on the camera shown in the menu?

It turns out that the version of Digikam I am using is not the most recent so I will upgrade and try again. But in case it is of any use here is the info
Digicam   2.8.1 running on Ubuntu 12.10
My 7D is listed as "Canon Inc digital camera (auto detected) "  when I try to import from it I get the message  "failed to connect to camera please make sure it is connected and turned on" at this point I can go to the camera in file manager and manually copy the files from the memory card so it is not a connection issue.

Yes - that's a very old version.  When you have upgraded try adding your
camera manually if it still doesn't work for you and see if the Import
function will work then.

Might not be of any help ... I had this behaviour (camera not detected)
some time ago when the camera wasconnected before firing up digikam.
What "solved" it was turning camera off and on again.

I have good and bad news :-/
1) I forgot the SD card was recently reformatted and was empty!! Thus
nothing showed up in the Import window  ...
2) I took several pics, plugged in the 7D. The pics show up in the
Import window. This means that Digikam does find the 7D automagically
and opens the DCIM folder. Downloading, however, throws an error: "Album
name cannot contain "/"."

I've no idea how to solve that - as I've set a standard Album name in
Settings > Config Digikam > Cameras > Behaviour

3) I then added the camera manually, but the outcome is the same.

Perhaps check the path do you have set under Settings > Config Digikam >
Cameras >Collections  ? I would suggest removing that album name you
made under Behaviour and making sure the path is correct to where you
wish the images to be stored.

I found no Collections under Cameras, just Behaviour - I unchecked "Use
a default album ..."
On Import I now go a step further to a dialogue which asks for a saving
location. No matter if I choose a folder on either of my two local
drives, I still get "Album name cannot contain '/'"

I've gone through the Settings and can see no obvious incorrect setting.

With both my Canons I have had to un-mount them before Digikam can find them, using the screen that now pops up (I had to set this up) when I connect the camera.  Worth a try! I am using Digikam 2.5.1 on Ubuntu 12.4 LTS.
