[Bug 285059] New: Digikam recognizes Canon S2 IS, but will not connect to camera to download images.

Bugzilla from pearson.douglas@gmail.com
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=285059

Summary: Digikam recognizes Canon S2 IS, but will not connect
                    to camera to download images.
           Product: digikam
           Version: 2.1.1
          Platform: Ubuntu Packages
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: Import
        AssignedTo: [hidden email]
        ReportedBy: [hidden email]

Version:           2.1.1 (using KDE 4.4.4)
OS:                Linux

Using Digikam in Ubuntu 11.10 with Unity desktop.  Digikam auto detects the
camera (As Canon Inc, Canon Digital camera) but will not connect with it to
download images.  The camera is detected in Nautilus, which will download the
photos.  F-Spot will also connect and download.  I tried this from KDE and get
the same results.  I also tried to manually add the camera, but to no avail.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Open DigiKam, connect Canon Powershot S2 IS with USB cable provided by Canon.
Import button greyed out.  Opening Import menu item and clicking Camera results
in auto recognition of camera.  Clicking on this auto recognized camera does
not do anything:  It does not connect, and no error message results.  Manually
adding camera "Canon S2 IS" and identifying it as USB produces an entry on the
camera menu item.  Clicking on this Camera item produces an error box which
states that Digikam could not connect to the camera and offers "retry" and
"abort" choices.  Retry produces same results.

Actual Results:
See above (Steps to Reproduce).

Expected Results:
Have Digikam connect to camera and allow me to select which photos to download
and have the option to rename them upon import.

This is a packaging issue as official Ubuntu packages have disabled libgphoto2
support during built.

Thanks for your reply.  What can I do to mitigate the libgphoto2 being
disabled in the official Ubuntu package?  Is there a workaround?  I know I
can download the photos by putting the card into the cardreader, but that
will not allow automatic renaming upon download.

I confirm this bug on Kubuntu - KDE 4.7.4, Digikam 2.1.1 does nothing after
Improt is selected (although it shows the camera in the menu).

KDE is able to access photos via camera:/ pseudo protocol.
