A free curve is not restored correctly (in the BWSepia filter), instead it
seems to be reset (it is just a strait diagonal line). The smooth curve however
works as expected.

Yes, and it's done using interpolation provided by smooth algorithm. Why ?
because if you set a free curves with a 16 bits color depth image, you need to
save 65536 values somewhere (currently in digiKam rc file)... It's not clean...
