Currently, selecting a region in the image editor (not in tools, only main
widget) slightly darkens the selected region and not only the area around the
selection. this should not happen as it changes the impression of the image
while cropping it.

Seems to have vanished with Qt 4.6 / KDE 4.4 or whatever other reason. ;)
