[Bug 204482] New: Failed to open database error message

Bugzilla from frederic.gedin@free.fr
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=204482

Summary: Failed to open database error message
           Product: digikam
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: MS Windows
        OS/Version: MS Windows
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: general
        AssignedTo: [hidden email]
        ReportedBy: [hidden email]

Version:           10.0.0-beta3 (using KDE 4.3.0)
OS:                MS Windows
Installed from:    MS Windows

When creating a new camera, a dialog box proposes to record a new database in
%user%\Pictures (note that this is not the common place where I configured the
database location) and then a error message box is displayed with the following
message « Failed to open the database. Error message from database:
Erreur à l'ouverture du système de base de données. unable to open database
file Erreur lors de l'ouverture de la base de données
You cannot use digiKam without a working database. digiKam will attempt to
start now, but it will not be functional. Please check the database settings in
the configuration menu. »

Do you use Windows Vista ?

Try to use another path outside your home dir, for ex c:/temp. This problem is
know under Vista : right file management returned by OS are dumy...

I use NTFS (but full r/w permissions) and it doesn't work using latest stable
(4.3) with the installer.

But uninstalling everything and installing previous stable version (4.2x, cant
remember) everything goes allright.

One last thing: after using working 4.2x version, uninstall everything BUT
dikikam.db and photos, then install 4.3, select old db location and collection
directory results in digikam "seeing" those pictures but incapable of opening
them (being raws), nor adding albums or adding collecions.

Seems like some type of kioslave problem, but other applications (like kate)
can open/create/save files without problem... so i doubt it.

I also experience similar problem (0.10 in KDE 4.2.2 windows binaries).
Database could not be created under my user account folder (I got message that
I have to created database in dircetory to which I have write permission). I
was able to create database file on other place. My system is Windows XP SP3.

I also tried 1.0.0-b3 packages in KDE 4.3. I couldn't create the database file
though I got no error message like in case 0.10 (probably the First run
assistant will not trigger that error message).

I have a similar problem with KDE 4.3 and Windows XP SP3. I tried %user%
directories, but also c:\tmpPictures. In both cases digikam does not show
pictures or create albums. ShowFoto can open single pictures, but not
directories. I have seen error messages like "Could not create database files"
as well. However, I do believe that there is now a database file in the
location. In case ShowFoto uses a database as well, maybe the DB backend is a
problem. But to me it looks more like a kioslave-thingy. Although I am not a
programmer. Is there something I can do to debug? I do have Visual Studio
installed, but I never checked out or build KDE Windows components.

Hi Frederic,

Could you try digiKam 3.1.0 and let us know if this is still a problem?
   http://download.kde.org/stable/digikam/digiKam-installer-3.1.0-win32.exe

If you are no longer using digiKam could you let us know that as well?
