I have two fuzzy searches and if I right-click on either of them I get a pop-up
with an option to rename the search. However, when I click on this option the
pop-up disappears and nothing else happens.

This works for me, but I ran into another problem:
If you rename a saved fuzzy search, the

- Current Fuzzy Image Search
- Current Fuzzy Sketch Search

will be removed from the list. The re-appear only when restarting digiKam.

Humm. I thought this was related to my dirikamrc file so I started with a new
one. I re-imported a photo directory, did a sketch and a fuzzy search. I still
wasn't able to rename images by selecting the "rename" option from the pop-up.
Could this be related to some KDE/QT library which is installed on my system?

Good question... I have nearly the same setup as you, hard to tell what is goin
wrong.

- for the builtin searches, which can neither be renamed nor removed, show a
context menu
  with disabled actions (this is clearer than showing no context menu at all)
- fix the slotTextSearchFilterChanged gone wild
