I would like to add that an animation when browsing photos in View mode could
help spatial navigation. When a user advances to the next photo, the first
picture could shrink to the left and the next picture could expand from the
right (as mentioned in OP). However, the reverse could also be true: when a
user goes back to the previous photo, the animation would be from left to right
(the reverse animation). This will make browsing the photos much easier and
more intuitive.
