Try your procedure again, only this time in the "showfoto, color, color management" dialog select a default working space other than srgb. The "default" working space shouldn't have any affect on a properly color-managed application's ability to display an image that is in a color space other than the default color space.
Try your procedure again, with srgb as your default working space. Make sure that the little "Color Managed View is enabled/disabled" button in the lower righthand corner is set to its default "disabled" (this little button is not mentioned in the digikam documentation, so the default "disabled" is where most people will leave it). You will be able to get a non-srgb image to display correctly. However, SAVE the non-srgb image that looks correct on your screen under a new name. Open the original and the saved versions in gimp or krita. The "saved" image will look really wrong because what digikam/showfoto does is "convert" the rgb numbers to srgb (NOT what you asked it to do), but it leaves the original non-srgb embedded profile, still embedded, as "gimp, image, image properties" will show you.
