If you use the Aspect Ratio crop (under Transform) of the image editor,
this feature is already implemented
(including rules of thirds, harmonious triangles and golden mean).
You did not tell which digikam version you are using...

Cool, if I go to Aspect Ratio crop, pick rule of thirds _and_ no aspect ratio, that is what I'm after.
