[Bug 151233] New: Show statistics for all images in (sub-)folders

http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=151233
Summary: Show statistics for all images in (sub-)folders
           Product: digikam
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: Ubuntu Packages
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: wishlist
          Priority: NOR
         Component: general
        AssignedTo: digikam-devel kde org
        ReportedBy: bug christianmayer de

Version:           0.9.2-final (using KDE KDE 3.5.8)
Installed from:    Ubuntu Packages

I'd like to be able to show statistics about all images in an selected folder (with the ability to select multiple folders at the same time...)

Especially I'm interested about:
- how is the distribution of focal lengths (directly and converted to a normal cameral w/o crop)
=> should I buy a wide angle or an tele next...
- how it the distribution of used aperture
=> can I get the f/4 or do I need an f/2.8 lens next...

There are tools that give me that information through the command line, but integrated in digikam would be great (and doesn't the new database scheme support exactly such an query?)

Christian,

The new database format used with new 0.10.0 release (KDE4) will store these values.

Gilles,

then I did guess correctly.

So I only want an "histogram" of the information in ImageMetadata for all pictures in the selected folder(s).

Doing a good histogram for this is non-trivial:
According to my experience with a home-brew solution,
the bin-width to be chosen very much depends on the number of entries.
Moreover, it can become very spiked. And a separation according
to lenses would be helpful as well.

Also: where should one put such a statistical information?
Maybe another side-bar could carry the needed plots,
together with a selection of all lenses or specific lenses.

Yes, that's not that easy. If there's no easy way to determine the width (I'd *try* e.g. (max-min)/10 or 20...) it could be made setable.

A custom query could help here. How many pictures have a focal length > 100mm?

> Moreover, it can become very spiked.

Why not? I'm interested in the values and not in an "pretty" histogram...

> And a separation according to lenses would be helpful as well.

As an option/filter: yes.
But *I* am mainly interested in all pictures at once (as I want to decide which type of lens I should buy next)

> Also: where should one put such a statistical information?

I was thinking of a right click context menu (e.g. named "Statistics") - but an side bar also would be fine.

Having read this conversation at flickr
http://www.flickr.com/groups/olympus_e500/discuss/72157594427198068

I thought it would be pretty useful and a nice feature to digikam!

So, here comes my vote for this "bug" errrr wish ;)

I saw this link: http://www.cpr.demon.nl/prog_plotf.html
posted on http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1037&message=27818592

I thought it would be a nifty feature for digikam, and apparently I'm not alone ;-)
