Summary: startup of digikam is very slow. Can take up to 5
                    minutes!
           Product: digikam
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: Debian testing
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: general
        AssignedTo: digikam-devel kde org
        ReportedBy: bert bertenselena net

Version:           0.9.2 (using KDE KDE 3.5.7)
Installed from:    Debian testing/unstable Packages
OS:                Linux

Starting up digikam takes several minutes on my machine.
(Debian testing) this has happened with several digikam versions, currently debian package 0.9.2-3.
One detail to mention: I am storing the photos on an NFS mount on a file server. Accessing it over Wifi from my laptop with digikam

Seems like all database accesses are slow. Currently deleting an album out of the database, again several minutes.

Regards,

Bert

This report is invalid. digiKam  do not support yet remote repositories. There are already some reports about this subject, and we have planed to do it...

Bert,

I already tried the same setting at home with a slow wifi link (802.11b). It's not  very fast to start and display pictures, but this is only because of the network speed. Starting digikam with 7000 photos takes around 2 minutes...
Try to mount the file server with "nolock" option to see if it helps.

Note: as Gilles wrote, there's no support and no warranty with digikam (ie sqlite3) on network file system. Use at your own risks...
I recommand you to backup your digikam database very frequently!

Hello  Giles, Fabian

Thank you for your mail. I'm sorry to hear NFS is not supported by
digikam/sqlite.
What other options for network storage do you recommend? Would samba
smb be a better choice? (I had that a long time ago, but samba mounts
didn't work well with laptop-suspend back then.)

Giles: What do you mean with "planned to do it". Do you have some
specific info on what I can be looking forward to?

Fabian: my link is 802.11g. I do not really have problems with the
speed while watching/working on the pictures. Only the database access
is terribly slow. (for reference: I have about 8000 photos now)
Opening is definitely minutes of work, but also deleting an album is
painful. I will try the nolock option, but I remember vaguely that
openoffice had trouble with that.

Finally: Yes, I backup daily with dirvish, but actually I find
rebuilding the entire database not even that slow compared to the
above mentioned problems;-)

Regards,

Bert

This is not a problem with digiKam, but sqlite only.

==> KDE4 digiKam port is under way. It's planed to do it with this version.
