http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=147367
Summary: Support for color correction of Oval frame fade using
                    unfaded outer fame colors
           Product: digikam
           Version: 0.9.1
          Platform: SuSE RPMs
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: wishlist
          Priority: NOR
         Component: Image Editor
        AssignedTo: digikam-devel kde org
        ReportedBy: paul_p bellsouth net

Version:           0.9.1 (using KDE KDE 3.5.5)
Installed from:    SuSE RPMs

A useful feature for correcting color fade from UV for pictures displayed in Oval inserts for square picture frames.

Description:
Standard picture is placed in a Square or rectangle picture frame with a Oval mask to display only a portion of the main image.

Feature would allow the faded region be compared to the unfaded region.  Simular colors between the two regions could then be normalized.  Faded reds for original reds.

I don't think that I understand what you are aiming at. Maybe
you could also provide a screen-shot or mockup?

I would like to take the faded oval area of the attached image and compare the
colors to the unselected region.  I would then like to normalize or swap the
colors from the unfaded area of the picture to the faded area of the picture.

With these type of pictures, you do at least have a sample of the original
picture from which to sample colors.

Does this make since.  From the picture, the problem with the image should be
clear.  This is a photo form 50 years ago.  The oval area has almost faded to
a black-and-white.

Alright, this makes it clear. Presently this is not possible in the image
editor, because there is no concept of selections.
One option to do this right now, is to use krita (or gimp) to select
the oval region and for example vary the curves just for the region
until the colors match (one gets pretty far when using
a curve whose slope is slightly increasing all along).

Overall, to me this seems like a quite specialized situation
which is better dealt with a full-fledged image manipulation
than a plugin for digikam,

Arnd,

The comcept of selection exist (:=)), but it's limited to a rectangle actually...

Paul, a rectangle is enough for you ?

;-) Well, in addition to arbitrary shape (in the example
it is not quite an ellipse), one would also need
feathering, to achieve a smooth transition from one
to the other region.

Hi Paul,

how did you get along with unfading using the gimp?

I think we should close this bug, not because it is invalid,
but feathered selection is not going to be implemented soon,
if ever, as it is more something for a full image-editing program.
OK with you?

Best, Arnd

That's fine.  I would close it.

The first one looks ok.  I have started on a second one now.

I can't claim to be a gimp pro but they look pretty good.  Restoring the facial tone colors to no sample.  The face could look better.
