Well, I have got myself a new camera. And I now only use a card reader to
transfer images so I haven't seen this bug for a while. I just dug up the old
Canon IXUS 850IS and made a shot.

On Kubuntu 8.04 with digiKam 0.9.3 the filename is correct! Marking as fixed!
