Whether you convert to jpeg in camera or manually in your computer, at some
point you wish to store both raw and jpeg (or tiff, or png, or whatever other
format). And having two versions as separate images only makes unnecessary
mess. This is why the images with the same base name (e.g. image001.raw,
image001.jpg) should be shown as one with an optional possibility to expand
this group (which can be easily remembered in the database).

Take a look how geeqie handles this issue.
