Big, very big previews

Bugzilla from paurullan@bulma.net
  hi!

I would like to ask, before opening the feature request, if there could be the
possibility to make the photo thumbnails bigger. When I talk bigger is bigger
than the slider makes: something like 500x500px.

This would be great to quick-pick lots of blurred of bad-exposed photos.

See example:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/thomashawk/2714743756/

I want this feature so much I would give a bounty for who makes it come true. I
do not care if it is for 0.9.x or 0.10.

  cheers!

Go to setup and turn on option to load full image instead reduced preview.

I am sorry, the only «load full image» option I found was in:
Settings -> Configure digikam -> Ligh Table -> Load full size image

Is there anyother?

I am talking of having these big-previews here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/digikam/3083776081/
and to be able to move the slide (see note on the flickr page) to bigger sizes.

  cheers!

On the bottom of this dialog, there is an option for preview mode (F3 with album gui)

I found the option, but it is not my point. I would like this:

No, for memory cache optimization, thumbs size is limited to 256x256.

((I just removed Gilles reply, so I am answering to this one))

While 256x256 is a good choice for cache reasons,
there should be no principle difficulty to increase this
to 512x512 (or even to 1024x1024 if the machine is fast enough).
But (and that's a pretty big "but"): the thumnails are stored in
~/.thumbnails/large and the freedesktop thumbnail standard
is 256x256 for this. So increasing this would break this.
Moreover, this will lead to quite a bit of disk space usage
in this directory...

However, I do understand the wish!
Maybe there is some other approach which could be done
(eg. using the cached version first, but then display
a refined variant internally? This is to some extent
related to http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=146260)?

Best, Arnd

A 600x600 or 800x800 limit could be a great compromise. The biggest displays
out there you can buy without selling your mother are 2560x1600.

Maybe we just should not say these are thumbnails.

I do not think that anyobody who wants to seriously work with hundreds of
pictures (as my workflow needs) minds about the disk space or memory.

And obviously it can always put as a configurable setting.

Great!

I do not know. Has anybody an idea?

In some extend yes. But the idea is not context-switch and keep working in the
album view.

Size of .thumbnails dir is result of storing of thumbnails in PNG
format. JPG of similar size are 10% of PNG weight.

Even without breaking with .thumbnails standard it should be possible to
increase thumbnails size in Album GUI to 384px without losing much due
to quality of Qt zooming. Blowing up thumbs 200% is too much but 150% is
handled OK.

m.

ps. The last traceable version of .thumbnails standard was released in
September of 2004: from this time mean RAM size doubled at least and
    HDD capacity skyrocketed...
