Another case of "Missing Thumbnails" :-(

J Albrecht
Even after having deleted the thumbnail and digikam4 databases, and performed thumbnail rebuild maintenance a frustratingly many number of times, the photo thumbnail previews still do not generate! It’s driving me nuts. Can somebody hold my hand and walk me though this? Many thanks in advance.

I’m running 4.12 on Yosemite.

Under OSX, there is a system limitation which do not exist under Linux (or if you prefer, a different UNIX system settings) : The max open files by users.

Look this blog entry for details, and try to tune OSX to increase the limit, to see if this improve digiKam...

Note : Under my Yosemite, no similar dysfunction are visible, with default system settings.

Re: Another case of "Missing Thumbnails" :-(

J Albrecht
Merci, Giles.

As you had implied, it doesn’t seem to be an OSX issue. When I first installed this latest version of digikam I had no problems with local albums as well as with office network volumes. Once I left the office a few weeks ago, I started to experience these problems. I immediately removed any reference to the network albums in Settings. When that didn’t restore the thumbnails (after running Maintenance and restarting), I deleted both database files. Didn’t work :-(

So, while I truly appreciate your very quick and gracious response, I’m still left without any thumbnails for my local files. Any other suggestions?

Start digiKam from a console, following instructions at "For hangs out or dysfunctions" section :

Thumbnails have returned

Merci again.

Although the link provides no helpful “concise” directions on how to run the tool with the appropriate debug space for simple users such as myself (developers, please take note), I now have my thumbnails back. But, I’ve no idea why.

All I had done differently was activate (double click) the app from within /opt/digikam/Applications/digiKam/ rather than from cmd > Spacebar (Spotlight Search) as usual. When that worked I wanted to create an Alias to put into the Applications directory. Then I discovered that the existing file was already an alias referring to the original in opt/…

Was it merely a coincidence that after at least 6 attempts to flush the databases, it finally “stuck” and the program again operates as designed?

So, my thumbnails are back but I have no useful clues to provide to anybody else who may happen to find themselves in a similar predicament. Sorry :-(

Re: Thumbnails have returned

Philip Tuckey-2
I am having a similar experience with 4.12 on Yosemite. Sometimes the
thumbnails are displayed correctly and sometimes not at all, i.e.
digikam thinks there are no images in any album. Sometimes it works ok
when started by clicking on the alias in Applications and sometimes it
works ok when running it from a terminal/shell. I don't think it has
anything to do with a problem with the databases, at least not one that
requires completely rebuilding them.

Sporadic/Fleeting Thumbnails on Yosemite!

J Albrecht
Missing thumbnails. AGAIN!!

After finally seeing my thumbnails (with no idea why it had finally happened) I thought that the problem miraculously solved itself. However, the thumbnails have once again disappeared. I’ve done nothing differently this time compared to the last when the thumbnails decided to grace me with their presence. In addition to the thumbnails being absent, none of the kipi plug-ins are available now (they were, the last time that the thumbnails were visible). These are extremely frustrating experiences! What can be done to solve this?

If somebody suggests “debugging”, please bear in mind that I’m a photographer, not a console-junkie.  Apparently, I’m not the only one suffering from this. I’m sure that we’ll all appreciate the assistance.

Re: Sporadic/Fleeting Thumbnails on Yosemite!

J Albrecht
Thank-you again, Giles, for taking time on a Sunday to help me. Unfortunately, the new version does not work either. Must be something on my machine (and on other’s who are experiencing similar problems). Does the following dialogue provide a clue with which somebody might be able guide me towards a resolution:

“Could not start process. Unable to create io.slave”

Yet shortly afterwards, another dialogue shows “process complete”. I’m not sure which process this refers to but, it certainly does not result in my thumbnails re-appearing or in the kipi plug-ins becoming available again.

Re: Sporadic/Fleeting Thumbnails on Yosemite!

J Albrecht
One time upon starting dk yesterday evening, all of the thumbnails appeared. However when I tried to start the program again, they were gone,

I wonder if this may have something to do with an old Macports install of dk. I did  “sudo port uninstall digikam” and thought that it was gone. Could there perhaps be some remnants of kde left which conflict with what Gile’s new .pkg provides? If so, what steps are required to remove them?

I also noticed something very important which had earlier escaped me: When I installed the new .pkg, and started the new dk program, all of my old settings (albums, db location etc) were still in effect! I know; this is a major point and likely a key issue in the troubleshooting exercise. Couldn’t see the forest for the trees!  Anyway, I’ve tried to clean everything relating to the old install of dk including the entire  /opt/digikam directory. There must be a cache and other settings somewhere. I couldn’t find them. Does anybody have a suggestion?

Re: Sporadic/Fleeting Thumbnails on Yosemite!

Gilles Caulier-4
yes definitively. An old Macports install can be problematic here.

By default Macports is installed to /opt/local/
digiKam package is installed to /opt/digiKam to prevent some conflicts.

But digiKam use some external process to play with database, as KIOSLaves. If previous Macports has installed these process, this can be create concurrent rules.

A simple check can be to rename /opt/local as /opt/local.bak as root with this command from a console :

>sudo mv /opt/local /opt/local.bak

...and to restart your computer and later to try to run digiKam...
